At Disney’s 2011 D23 expo — we all know what that is, I won’t bother to explain — four REAL Disney princesses, Paige O’Hara (the voice of Belle), Lea Salonga (the voice of Mulan/Jasmine), Anika Noni Rose (the voice of Tiana) and Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel), were given awards (?) and then sang “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” together. Ahhh, GIRRRRLS! This is what we’ve been waiting for, ever since we were a child and took this song literally and were terrified after having a dream during which we went blind, because we thought that’s what our heart wanted! Let’s take a look at the for some reason poor-quality video, even though it is from Disney and you think they could’ve spent a few dollars on recording it pretty well or that they could have at least just gotten the sound directly from the soundboard or whatever and then mixed it into the video I mean I’m not trying to do anyone’s job here but what is going ON with this sound quality!

WHOAAA LADIES! Unfortunately, though, in this video it just seems like a bunch of old ladies singing a song. I wish they also did solo performances with songs from their characters, that would be a bit more exciting I think. WHAT? What did you say? What was that? SPEAK UP. OH, THEY DID? THEY DID DO SOLO PERFORMANCES OF SONGS FROM THEIR SPECIFIC MOVIES? OH, THAT’S GREAT!

Here is Ariel.

Here is Tiana.

Here’s our girl Mulan.

And finally, Belle.

Ohhh shiiiiiiiiiiiiit ladiesssssssssss! My fave is Mulan out of this bunch, which is a surprise. I wouldn’t have guessed that my fave would’ve been Mulan. Ariel seems to be trying a bit too hard and Belle looks too much like a Real Housewife and she doesn’t sound like Belle enough. Unfortunately I’m not really that familiar with Tiana. Not my generation. So she’s out. Mulan is the winner. But this video raises an important question: If you were a disney princess, which disney princess would YOU be? I’d be Belle, probably, because I’m a beauty and everyone else is SUCH a beast. Girl talk! (Via YBMW.)

  1. The extreme GIRRRRL-iness of that just shook Philadelphia to its very core.

  2. If I were a Disney Princess, I would like to think I would be Belle, because I like to read and she likes to read and everyone thinks I’m weird and everyone thinks she’s weird!

But I would probably actually be the lady with the afghan dog from 101 dalmatians. Only with worse posture and probably setting myself on fire accidentally.

    • I just rediscovered how much I love 101 Dalmatians, with the opening montage of dogs and owners being one of the best parts! Oh Disney.

Also I’m pretty much going to always picture you this way from every comment going forward.

  3. if i were a disney princess…i would never be a disney princess. even mulan, the one kind of bad ass chick who gets in there and proves that women can give up their lives for god and country fucks it up at the end when she goes after the man. why is that the primary goal given to disney princesses? why is being a princess even a cool thing? when i was little i wanted to be mia hamm. i remember that series of commercials where she got into competitions with michael jordan, now there’s a freaking role model.

  4. “beeeeeeeeeeeeeeads of jade for beaut-eeeeeeeeee” = best part of Mulan

  5. if what i learned about gender roles from disney movies is correct, even though these women are beautiful and talented, they won’t be valid until they find a rich man to marry. it’s nice of them to give it a try anyway, though.

    • it’s nice to know our real worth, ya know?

      • You hate Disney so much!

        • yep yeppers.

        • pues, i should clarify. when you’re a mexican american woman gender roles are ridiculous. growing up in a situation where the men literally have no chores and are applauded for their sexual conquests while you make dinner, clean the bathroom, eat after they eat, wash their dishes, and are not allowed to date until college (and then it’s only because you finally made the decision to get the fuck out of albuquerque and go to school in state halfway across the country where you don’t have hundreds of cousins that you have to take care of like little boys because they happened to have received a y chromosome and you didn’t), it just makes you a smidge bitter. it also helps if you are a chicano studies major with a focus on feminism and the role of the chicana woman. then you get all uppity when you discuss disney princesses.

    • Doyoyoyoy welcome to EARTH

    • I always thought the Disney princes were more boring and passive than the princesses, and after all they were all supposed to get married, too. In fact, ALL of the modern Disney movies I’ve seen, whether the hero was male or female, had a strong romantic subplot married with a “quest” storyline. Another way to read the Disney princesses story arc is that even though the heroines wanted to go beyond their prescribed social roles, they ultimately found social acceptance without compromising their dreams. Marriage at the end of the movie doesn’t have to be read as the ultimate “goal” of the story–it can represent attaining social acceptance or the successful integration of “male” and “female” character traits.

I think there are valid feminist criticisms to make about traditional fairy tales, but the Disney movies are not the first cultural product I would aim at.

  6. If I were a Disney princess, I would be this one:

  7. I am so jealous for any of you who could be watching NY1 right now and listening to the harrowing tales of people who thought there was a subway train going by… or my favorite, the guy who lost his collectable plate collection. I love a good “that earthquake shattered my tacky collectable plate” story so much.

  8. Is it just me, or does it appear that some of them tried to dress how their characters would dress? I mean, the Ariel girl is basically wearing a mermaid outfit, and Mulan is is kinda dressed like a geisha…

  9. I have the weirdest tears right now.

  10. where the hell is pocahontas????

  11. Kelly would sing Ariel’s songs for me when she was little, but only from behind the sofa. She knows all the words to every song ever written. Brilliant child. (Sorry Kelly. I promise not to tell any more cute Kelly stories.)

  12. Am I the only person hysterical over the rapid fire shutter clicks? Chill, dude, you’ll get the shot.

  13. If I were a Disney princess, I would probably be the new one from Pixar’s Brave because I am so excited about that movie, you guys!!
