I went to college in Philadelphia, which is very impressive, and I love it very much even though it is kind of terrible, so that is my full disclosure before I begin here, but, so, I have to ask: What the F is going on here with Brad Pitt’s World War Z kind of attempting to dress up Glasgow as Philadelphia? I mean, I think I might know why Brad Pitt’s World War Z is filming in Glasgow rather than Philadelphia. Which is because Pennsylvania offers a tax credit thing for movies, I don’t know, it’s boring, and back in February it looked like it wouldn’t be offered anymore. And this was when some major films like the next Bourne movie, The Dark Knight Rises, and World War Z were getting ready to film there. So I guess, at that point, World War Z, which is set in Philadelphia, decided to look for other locations to film. But. GLASGOW?!

Guys! That is not what Philadelphia looks like! That is not really what anywhere in America looks like, I don’t think! Why did you go so far away! A genuine question I have, because I know nothing, and I don’t really expect to get an answer here but I’d like to ask it anyway, is: Is it that important for a movie that is going to spend roughly $60,000,0000,0000,0000 anyway to save money by moving production to a place that isn’t going to be a great stand in for the city in which the movie takes place? I definitely don’t know all of the pieces to this story. All I know is what I’ve already said. Maybe there are some very good incentives to film in Glasgow. Maybe Brad Pitt just LIKES Glasgow. Maybe Glasgow pays Brad Pitt to film there. Maybe Glasgow knows a dirty secret about Brad Pitt and they are going to tell it to everyone if he doesn’t film World War Z there. Maybe at the end of World War Z you find out that they’ve actually been in Glasgow the whole time. Who knows. But, barring those possibilites, WTF? Guys? WTF is going on with this movie? (Via Ain’tItCool.)

  1. All I know is you do NOT want to see what is under a Scottish zombie’s kilt.

  2. They’re shooting in Glasgow because if it’s not Scottish, it’s crap.

  3. It is so unlike Hollywood to do something so devoid of common sense. Ben Franklin almost named his book Hollywood instead of Common Sense because of how on point they usually are.

  4. Guid eenin, one cheese steak, whiz, wit, thenk ye. Gow igles!

  5. Is it always sunny in Glasgow? If it is, that’s probably why.

  6. I don’t have an answer to the question about Glasgow looking like Philadelphia, but I do know that I just tried to say “braaaaaains” with a Scottish accent and ended up rolling my r’s so hard that I burst out laughing in my office and decided to treat myself to a cookie, which probably answers some other questions.

  7. I like to think that when Brad Pitt was notified of this he said “What do you mean they brainsed the shooting schedule”?! Then he ate the directors brains.

  8. This is downright UNAMERICAN. Everybody knows that you go to Canada to film fake versions of major U.S. cities.

    • Where did anyone get the idea that Toronto is an acceptable substitute for New York? That shit always takes me right out of a movie.

    • Also they missed out on hiring zombie Randolph Duke and zombie Mortimer Duke, which would have been the only reason I’d ever see that movie… to learn about class and race issues in the Zombie Futures Exchange.

  9. Lord, I’m not a praying man, but please let “Brangelina” mean something stupid in Gaelic.

  10. Tax breaks probably or permits or something.

  11. If you’d ever been down Sauchiehall Street late Saturday night/early Sunday morning you would know the answer to your question…

  12. I agree, it’s stupid; the UK is probably more expensive to shoot a movie in because of the dollar-to-pound conversion anyway.

  13. Wow! Look at that ad!
[a small box with "Flim Springfield" in it]
All right, this place *must* be hot. They don’t need a big ad, or even correct spelling.

I imagine that this must be why World War Z is filming near my workplace and regular lunch break haunts. I have totally not been gawping at the US signage hanging around George Square, not at all.

    • Please tell me you are sneaking off work to play a zombie. I totally would be doing this, were I still living in the vicinity (I am still living, just across the pond until next Monday).

      • Also, I would like to take this opportunity to nominate the film UNLEASHED, with Jet Li, Bob Hoskins and Morgan Freeman as least likely man to be living in Glasgow.

Actually set in Glasgow, actually terrible.

  14. Wait, are you saying that Philadelphia is impressive, or you going to college in Philadelphia is impressive?

  15. Every time I saw the word “Glasgow” in this post and subsequent comments I got a chuckle from imagining you pronouncing that way you do. The American tongue just wasn’t built for it, lets not even start on Edinburgh.

    • Edin-buuuraaaw.
      Eedenbohroh
      Edinburg.

(correct pronunciation: Edinburrah. Nickname: Auld Reekie (old smokey).

This has been a sneak post by the Scottish tourism ninjas.

  16. It’s cos the UK tax break system will basically pay up to 20% of the film’s budget. Which is pretty substantial. Money wins over authenticity every time.

  17. Knowing it’s been shot in Glasgow will make the film better.

  18. They have filmed in Glasgow because Philly wanted a huge amount of money for a tiny amount of time to film. Whilst Glasgow said they could film for a huge amount of time but for a small amount of money :)

  19. http://www.philadelphiaspeaks.com/forum/general-discussion/24778-world-war-z-glasgow-scotland-standing-philadelphia.html

you must have never stepped foot in fitler’s square or rittenhouse then because the architecture is almost spot on. so aside from the cheaper filming credits, it looks a hell of a lot like two really big neighborhoods here.

  20. Hmm. I go to college in Philadelphia as well, and I’d say these shots don’t look a whole lot like Philadelphia, but they don’t NOT look like Philadelphia? They kind of just look like “Any City, USA.” I could see this being certain parts of Center City, or perhaps Old City.

  21. Am I to understand that you have never read the book then, Kelly? Taking into account your inability to place commas properly when writing large numbers, the likelihood that you do much reading is slim.

  22. Unless the movie is vastly different than the book, then it wont really centralize in one place making the shooting local irrelevant.

    Read a fucking book–Steve Buscemi

  23. I’m actually in the locations team for World War Z. Theres a bundle of reasons why they chose Glasgow, the main ones are:

    - Scheduling: Philly, NYC, all the american cities that were considered would only offer up weekends for shooting, whereas we could shoot throughout the 2 weeks in Glasgow.
-Financial – Tax breaks as stated above.
    - Glasgow architecture – Glasgow’s buildings are slightly reminiscent of American architecture, that alongside some major dressing (and CGI-ing more stuff in post) and we should have a fairly authentic take on Philadelphia.

    It’s been a loooooooong 2 weeks.
