Can you believe that it is June already? Well, believe it, because it is so true. It’s practically July even! Holy cow. Take it easy, 2011, you’re going to wear yourself out! Of course, if it’s almost July, that means we’re already halfway through this year’s movies. Oh no! Technically, that’s not entirely true, since most of the movies in January and February and March are intentionally garbage because of some showbiz reasons people like you and me aren’t even ALLOWED to understand. But we’re definitely cranking through these blockbusters and before you know it, it’ll be awards season or some such. But that’s a good thing. It means we have so much more to look forward to. Yay! (Haha. Yay!) So, let’s look forward to some stuff. After the jump, it’s a list of our most anticipated movies still to come in 2011:

Captain America: The First Avenger

Disappointment is like food. You get a fair amount of it on a regular basis, and when you’re done processing and digesting it, you’re ready for more. (Very good analogy. Pulitzer Prize!) We were all so looking forward to the X-Men: First Class movie only to discover that it was not very good. Let’s put it this way: if X-Men: First Class was an actress, she would be January Jones in X-Men: First Class. But that’s all behind us now, and we are open to the possibility of more disappointment. But Captain America looks great! And the idea of a superhero movie set during World War II is very different and smart. So hopefully we will go hungry this time, disappointment-wise, I am just very intent on running that metaphor into the goddamned GROUND.

Cowboys and Aliens

There were all of these articles a couple of months ago about how the marketing department of whatever studio made this movie was getting concerned because the movie itself is rather serious and for real, but people hear the name “Cowboys and Aliens” and think it’s going to be silly. Uh, people are dumb? A serious movie about cowboys and aliens sounds very good. Attending to the confusion of dumb people will almost certainly be the death of our culture. Also: Daniel Craig! Missed you, buddy.

Crazy Stupid Love

Every year there is at least one romantic comedy that looks like it might finally do it and be a good romantic comedy instead of a terrible romantic comedy, and nine times out of ten it turns out to not do it at all and to totally just be a s terrible romantic comedy, but this year’s entry Crazy Stupid Love continues to hold the promise. Good luck to all of us. We are probably going to need it.

Take Shelter

YESSSS! Guys, I would watch a movie about Michael Shannon having terrifying visions of the PHONE BOOK. He is so good at acting. There are really only, like, three actors these days: Daniel Day Lewis, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Michael Shannon. That’s it. Put them in a remake of Heat and then sink California into the ocean.

The Muppets

We’ve been over this, but even as someone who despises nostalgia and thinks it is a death trap, I can’t help but feel nostalgia for the Muppets. Also, Amy Adams won, like, 100 points in The Fighter so that even though she’s clearly just recapturing that Enchanted glory, she’s still got some of those points to spare. As with anything that is, ultimately, geared towards children, there is a lot of opportunity for this to blow up in everyone’s faces, tragically killing all those children, but at least we will die together WAKA WAKA WAKA (get it?!)

A Dangerous Method

A movie about Sigmund Freud and Karl Jung having slap-fights over women in paddleboats doesn’t really seem like my thing, necessarily, until I realized that it was directed by David Cronenberg and that it starred Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender. Uh, turns out kind of my thing. Admittedly, David Cronenberg has made at least as many bad movies as he has good, with Existenz counting, as like, 100 bad ones, but even his bad ones are at least bad in interesting ways and also VIGGO MORTENSEN AND MICHAEL FASSBENDER. If I had one critique this early of a movie I have not seen yet it would be: needs more knife fights in a Russian bath house. But that’s it so far!

Kelly’s Picks!

Hi, it’s Kelly now! These are my picks:

Martha Marcy May Marlene

I love cults and everything about cults. I think they are very interesting. If I could go back to school and study cults I wouldn’t because it would be a waste of time and money, but I REALLY want to. Maybe I will just get a book about them. And Elizabeth Olsen seems great. And I love movies with an unreliable narrator for many reasons, including that it gives you a good opportunity to talk to the person next to you. “What is happening?” “Who is she again?” “Wait what just happened?” “What is this movie ABOUT?” In closing, this movie looks creepy and great, I can’t wait to see it. Very anticipated.

30 Minutes or Less

I’m not generally one for action comedies because literally any amount of “action” in a movie makes me tune out immediately, just because that’s not the kind of thing that I go for, not that there’s anything wrong with action, but the amount that I AM one for Aziz Ansari and Jesse Eisenberg movies definitely overshadows that fact. Those guys are great.

Another Earth

This is director Mike Cahill’s first feature, good job to him, and I love the idea for this movie so much. What if there WERE another Earth out there, everybody? What if! Would you want to go to it? What if you accidentally killed a family? Does that change your mind? I wonder if that Kelly would be as excited about the movie Another Earth as this Kelly is.

Wanderlust

Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston are a married couple who want to escape modern society so they move to a commune with hippies or something like that. That’s what this one is about. And it’s directed by David Wain and produced by Judd Apatow. And Justin Theroux, Ken Marino, Kerri Kenny, Jo Lo Truglio, and lots of other people are in it. It is going to be good I’m almost positive even though I don’t know that much else about it!

So, those are our most anticipated movies and they are all the correct movies to be anticipating. Are there any other ones that you guys are anticipating? What are they? You’re also still anticipating these though, right?

  1. Not looking forward to any of those movies

    • Are there any movies that you are looking forward to sir?

      • its not a “movie” per se but I’m looking forward to finishing eastbound and down season 2, only watched the first six or seven episodes a couple months ago.

I’m a huge fan of the wire and had been looking forward to watching treme for a long time. watched the first two episodes last night and it was so bland and milktoasty (sp?) milquetoasty. Very very boring and meh. I was all like, “Take this thing (thing being David Simon) back to Baltimoooorrrre.” non sequiter silence of the lambs references in tha motha fuckiiin hiz-ouse yo

  2. I kind of just want to see The Tree of Life again. Have they mentioned anything about the IMAX companion piece? I know there’s the director’s cut, but supposedly there was more of the “big bang” stuff filmed that was supposed to make up a separate film. Haven’t heard anything about it though.

  3. I’m looking forward to 30 Mintues Or Less, Drive, Knights of Badassdom (Danny Pudi AND Peter Dinklage, you guys!), A Good Old Fashioned Orgy, The Rum Diary and of course the last Harry Potter. Just sayin’….

  4. A Dangerous Method is the old timey Secretary of our generation! NnnnnNNNNnnn! Also, Michael Shannon scares me, but my favorite role of his has to be Fred Kleiser in Groundhog Day.

  5. A couple of days ago, Gothamist had this story:
Could Christina Hendricks Be The Next Wonder Woman?
    http://gothamist.com/2011/06/20/wonder_woman.php

    With this picture:

    With this quote:
“I’ve been wanting to wear that outfit my whole life … I had Underoos — I had Wonder Woman Underoos.”

So these movies are not even fucking close to my most anticipated move.

  6. I am looking forward to Crazy Stupid Love for obvious reasons:

    • If only Ryan Gosling being in a gay relationship with a 14 year old wouldn’t ruin his career and send him to jail

    • I’ve totally wanted to downvote you a million times because I love Ryan Gosling as much as you do and I fear that one day he will read Videogum and choose you over me… but alas, I can’t… because you are such a great Videogum “commentator”, as Winwood would say, and also I fear the wrath of the monsters. You win. The end. I tip my hat to you, Madam.

    • That is definitely not bothering me, unless we’re using the word as it’s used in the phrase “hot and bothered”, in which case I am so bothered. And also hot.

  7. I’m packing a bag to go camp out in front of Fandango World Headquarters!

  8. Jennifer Aniston is a terrific comedic actress…it would be nice to see her in a movie with good lines to say.

  9. Did anyone else notice in the A Dangerous Method trailer how the credits were rorschachs? Nice touch, trailer-makers. Mortensen and Fassbender are the selling points, Cronenberg is a capable director, and hopefully Knightly will be reined in, as I have seen one too many performances of hers run amok. She pulled me out of Never Let Me Go more often than not.

WHUT?! Gabe’s first two pics were films based off comic books! My word.

Crazy Stupid Love kind of looks like a 40-Year Old Virgin-American Beauty-Hitch mash-up. Could be good. Also, I don’t know if I’ll ever not want to watch and listen to Emma Stone. She’s captivating.

As for Marcy Martha May Marlene- two words: John Hawkes.

ANOTHER EARTH looks pretty fascinating. Serious, emotional, intriguing concept. High hopes!

30 Minutes or Less I want to be good. I like everyone involved. Fingers crossed!

    Yay movies.

  10. Did you guys know that The Muppets will have an original Toy Story short before it? That’s basically the greatest thing ever, right?

    • No, it’s the opposite of what you said. The only thing going for this Muppets movie is that it looks like Disney was pretty hands-off and allowed Jason Segal to be subversive and topical and make jokes not just for children — which is what made the real Muppets amazing and timeless. When Jim Henson died (still sad about that one) and his kids sold the production company to the Mouse, the whole tone and scope of what was done under their moniker shifted to be bland and corporate and unoffensive and generally unwatchable. (And incredibly branded to young kids who were raised by the Disney vault.) Granted, a lot has changed in the subdivisions of that company since the Muppet acquisition so that not *all* parts are categorically DisneyTM (which, ironically, may be a result of their disgusting “princess” lines, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers and any other piece of awful they have unleashed upon our culture). However, even if ABC has been producing some not-bad TV (not counting the last season of LOST), adding a Pixar “short” to what looks like a somewhat independent project just proves that the terrible taste makers who green light crap refuse to keep their gloved rodent hands off what many of us old people consider sacred.* Again.

*Conversely, because of the need for a tie-in, this movie could have legs — specifically frog legs… like what Doc Hopper makes! If executives *already* think they need to add in Pixar’s biggest movie brand to the project to get more people in the seats, this could actually be funny for those over three to eight.

  11. Wait, a Jennifer Aniston movie that sounds genuinely good and funny?

    Does not compute.

Not that I have anything against Jennifer Aniston. Not at all. On the contrary I think she’s great. But she chooses the absolute worst movies. WMOAT worst. I watched 10 minutes of the Bounty Hunter and I’m still upset.

  12. I know people sometimes hate on Jennifer Aniston because she has a bad habit of being in bad movies and bad tabloids, but I love her. I think she’s a great comic actress and I hope that Wanderlust will be a good movie!

    • Yeah, I’ve never hated Jennifer Aniston. More often than not I have not cared about anything the tabloids cover (her largest body of work), nor have I cared for the films she’s in. Listen- I saw Picture Perfect. I did my time.

But she was great as the choir teacher Mrs. Stevens in that South Park episode, as well as Annie in Iron GIant, Office Space, and I’m hoping she’s good in Horrible Bosses. Looking at her imdb page just now informs me that other than Friends and the things I already mentioned, I have not see her in much else. Ooh! I saw her in Management w/ Steve Zahn. There we go.

Anybody have any other good Aniston suggestions? How was the Good Girl?

Also, it turns out that this is a re-teaming with Rudd, having previously acted together in The Object of My Affection. Something tells me Wanderlust will be better tho. *cough*DAVIDWAIN*cough*

      • Also Paul Rudd was in the last season (couple of seasons?) of Friends. Maybe they’re big palz by now! Singing at a piano, probably.
I think she was good in The Good Girl, though I didn’t like the movie overall.

      • She is the best part of Just Go With It, but that is not saying much. It’s not about her performances, it’s about the projects in which her performances are contained!

She is great in The Good Girl. Also definitely check out Dreams of an Insomniac, which I don’t think exists anywhere but on VHS tapes, but it was like her first role or something? I’m not saying it was good or bad, but some Aniston trivia there.

      • I’ll watch David Wain put together IKEA furniture or a Colorform puzzle on a Freon-powered refrigerator if given the chance*… especially if he brings in anyone from the State or cast of Wet Hot American Summer. That guy is amazing. And Aniston isn’t that bad as long as she’s with a lot of other people in some kind of ensemble production. And I **love** me some Justin Theroux.

Huh. So they’re in a movie coming out in a few months? Nothing fishy or redundant about that tabloid scenario at all…

        *showing my age
**apologies for turning this into gawkergum

      • kajus, check out marley and me. its pretty cool.

    • I love her since “A Good Girl” and “Friends with Money”. I also agree that she’s a great comic actor.
Oh, and also liked her a lot in “The Switch”.

  13. That still of the man carrying the girl – what movie’s that from, “Rise of the Planet of the Asthmatics?” He looks like he’s barely left his driveway, but he’s gasping for air.

  14. You know, I like Hayley Atwell. She’ll probably make Captain America worth watching.

Other than that, I must say that Dangerous Method looks very interesting.

  15. Another Earth looks awesome!

and Martha Marcy May Marlene doesn’t look nearly as good as maggie and milly and molly and may.

  16. Dear Existenz, I am the only person who loves you. Sincerely, Jeb

    • I’m with you. I love the Chinese Restaurant. I don’t know why.

    • I opened an account at VideogumBank just to agree with you. Existenz is amazing, but completely polarizing. Gabe is major wrong sauce, not to be confused with wong sauce.

    • Existenz is one of my favo(u)rite movies ever, and I have seen all the movies. At the very end I said aloud in the theater “End it now! This must end now! Don’t answer the question!” then it went black and the credits rolled and I was all like “YES! YES!” out loud because it was a Matinee on Davisville and I was alone in the theater.

Cronenberg rules: Crash, Videodrome, Naked Lunch, etc.

Your money back if not satisfied.

  17. I would like a Ken Marino star vehicle*. Thanks!

*not to be confused with a Star Vehicle: motor vehicle capable of entering a Star Door, commonly a van.

  18. No one noticed that Gabe mistakenly tagged this post with “A Dangerous Mind” instead of “A Dangerous Method”? He must have been daydreaming about his favorite movie, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Or just about being a TV game show mogul with a dead George Clooney in his pool.

  19. Living in Los Angeles, I often have the opportunity to see free screenings of movies that won’t be out for a long time. This year, weirdly, I think I’ve been able to already see every single major comedy that will be released for the rest of the year except for a handful. Here’s what I’ve seen and how I feel about them:

The best comedy of the year for sure is Horrible Bosses. Charlie Day is incredible in this movie. Nuff said. (Well, actually, I will also say that Kevin Spacey is miraculously good in this movie after many years of sucking ass, Jason Bateman is basically Ron Livingston from Office Space in a good way, Colin Farrell is unrecognizable and maybe even a bit under-used in this one, and Jamie Foxx’s character is named Motherfucker Jones)

My second favorite comedy of the year is the criminally underrated and underseen movie Cedar Rapids. C’mon folks, get on this! It is seriously very good.

Third favorite is Bridesmaids, very funny and sweet.

30 Minutes Or Less would be 4th favorite, but mainly because of Danny McBride and Aziz Ansari. It took me about a half hour to buy into Jesse Eisenberg’s character. Something was off about him in the beginning. But Danny McBride fucking OWNS this movie in full Kenny Powers mode. Aziz should (and probably will) get a lot more prominent film work after people see him in this, and that is a very good thing.

5th favorite is a tie between Paul and Wanderlust. Both very funny, and I can’t decide which one is better. They’re very different. Jennifer Aniston is great in Wanderlust, better even than her role in Horrible Bosses, which happens to be great again. Paul Rudd has an epic scene where he talks to himself in the mirror. I was crying from laughing at that scene. Paul (the movie, not Rudd) is also underrated and kind of hated on, but it straight up worked for me. Very satisfying movie watching experience. But it probably would’ve been better if Edgar Wright directed it.

I also saw these movies in advance:

The Sitter (David Gordon Green’s upcoming babysitting movie with Jonah Hill, Sam Rockwell and Max Records. Good but not great)
The Trip (Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon eat at restaurants and do impressions of people. Its also semi serious. A pleasant, but light helping of comedy)
50/50 (Seth Rogen has really cornered the market on “buddy-cancer movies”. Its good but having Rogen in it made me keep thinking about Funny People the entire time, which hurt the movie for me)

Then there’s the pretty mediocre crop of comedies that have already come out such as:

    Your Highness (ok)
    The Green Hornet (meh)
    The Hangover 2 (wack)
    Take Me Home Tonight (whatever)
    Hall Pass (no)
    Arthur (gross)
    The Dilemma (fuck this)
and others that hurt me to type out.

Finally, there are the movies that are funny, but I wouldn’t necessarily classify them as comedies:

Attack The Block is my favorite movie of the year at the halfway point. Its seriously funny, but also seriously intense. Its definitely part comedy, but also part adventure, part sci fi, part fantasy and part horror. This is why I love it, but also why I can’t confidently place it in a list of comedies.

Jason Reitman’s next movie Young Adult is fan-fucking-tastic. Charlize Theron plays a writer of teen novels who spirals out of control while trying to steal her high school sweetheart away from his happy marriage and newborn child. Patton Oswalt is in this, and he’s not just some random dude with a line or two. Also, this is the best script Diablo Cody has written to date. This is not really a comedy though. Dramedy, maybe. Pretty dark actually.

Win Win was great! Is it a comedy? I’m not sure. I laughed a bunch, but its not really something I’d put on if I was looking for laughs. If this counts as a comedy, this is better than every movie I’ve mentioned here except Attack The Block.

Also, Midnight In Paris falls into the Woody Allen category. Woody gets his own stand alone category because he is that awesome.

I still haven’t seen Bad Teacher, The Big Year, Bernie, The Change Up, Our Idiot Brother, Crazy Stupid Love, The Guard, or the Harold And Kumar 3D movie. I’ve had the opportunity to see a few of these and decided to blow em off. I’m sure at least a couple of these will be good.

  20. I will only see Martha Marcy May Marlene because Sarah Paulson is in it and she was very good in Studio 60 and it looks like a Cult Classic.

  21. Taking Shelter is my most anticipated and dreaded upcoming film. Anyone with a history of mental illness in their families look at artful depictions of their worst fears with universal ‘yes so much but mostly yikes’. It’s like empathetic warfare: knowing everything that haunts your sweatiest sudden wake-ups, and teasing it with validation. I mean, allegedly, I’ve read, I certainly wouldn’t know myself.

    • Are the “Owners” the leader of your spam cult? Are you Martha Marcy May Marlene? Is that why this website you linked to has paragraphs full of nothing but SHOUTING ALL CAPS?!? Is that your cult dad yelling at everyone? Stay away from me cult dad, I dream shot you!

      No, no, no, defiantly not.

  23. Was pretty excited about the Cronenberg flick until:

    Keira Knightley. Playing mad.

  24. I liked X-Men: First Class guys! FASSBENDER owned that movie! Also excited about A Dangerous Method! Cronenberg+Viggo are on a roll!
