Haha. This looks good enough. Alexander Payne is a good director, and George Clooney is fucking GEORGE CLOONEY. I’m sure it’s a well-written, thoughtful drama with a bit of a comedic edge to it about the difficult and unexpected curve-balls that life can throw at you in the stadium of…life (very good sports metaphor, very cool). But man oh man, even if this is the Greatest Movie of Our Times, I’m not sure that I have ever seen a more perfect graphic encapsulation of “Being White Is Hard” than a man flopping impotently down the street in a pair of boat shoes after having just learned that his wife cheated on him. Being white: still hard. 2011. ALOHA!

New hilarious image of anguish: Cry swimming.
Always a danger, because as you may already know they put a special chemical in pool water that turns blue if you cry in it.
I see you Rob Huebel at 1:30, you can’t fool me
I’m going to be that guy. Song at the end of the trailer, anyone?
just looked it up and it’s Blue Skies by Noah and the Whale, now put that on your zune sir
Thanks, sir, and it is already on my Zune, which is why I was even more embarrassed and self-loathing; I knew that whatever it was, I owned it.
I was in the exact same boat.
As a side note: RIP Zune. I will always remember.
Pretty sure being cheated on is hard regardless of your skin color.
True. And this actually looks pretty good. But according to IMDB, this movie is about:
A land baron tries to re-connect with his two daughters after his wife suffers a boating accident.
A land baron? Really? A land baron?
Maybe he would have been there for his wife if he wasn’t too busy polishing his monocle and selling off shares of Occidental Petroleum.
I just spit out my coffee. Well played. A million upvotes to you and a ride on my aerojet to the Congo post-haste!

(This shorthand will take off like crazy with the kids, just you wait.)
A boating accident? Was she cheating on him with a water baron?
Actually, I believe that IMDB has just gifted us with the world’s most oblique motorboating reference.
“Died in A Motorboating Accident” is what you put on the gravestone of someone you hate.
Pretty sure life in general is often hard despite your skin color. But for some reason, dude thinks it’s the most hilarious thing ever to make that joke over and over and over and over and over again.
I expected an entirely different movie:

Oh Frank, I can always count on an 80s punk reference from you.
There’s always a minor threat of him making an 80s punk reference looming about
Here’s hoping we never have to endure FLW’s replacements.
Just one Minute, men. Have no Fear. I’m not going anywhere.
7 Seconds in i had The Germs of an idea to make a Milo Goes To… reference, but FLW beat me to the Descendents joke, so Murphy’s Law finds us like a bunch of Circle Jerks and Misfits making jokes about being white instead of Black. Flag it if you want, this aging punk’s Suicidal Tendencies will find him Dead. Kennedys step grand daughter niece is divorcing that Cro-Mags that wants to follow in the shadow of Reagan. Youth today don’t even use their Bad Brains, The Dicks. To them, i say F.U.Gazing at your navel makes you Dead. Milkmen don’t deliver anymore, DRIving a truck just isn’t what anybody wants to Husker Du.
You sir have taken SS Decontrol of this thread.
You can have it back in a Bedlam Hour.
I don’t know how there could be ANY 80s punk references, seeing as how Blink 182 invented the genre in the 90s.
Clooney does in fact want a Suburban Home.
Physical Impossibilities Afficiando Magazine: George Clooney Is Fucking George Clooney
What kind of over-the-top gross makeup did they use to make George Clooney look like an average dorky dad?
He had to go to reverse-charm school, where he got lessons in shitty posture, lack of charm, gracelessness and self-pity.
George Clooney? Rob Huebel? Count. Me. IN.
More like count them in…to you?
Also, did you know not all the comments can be winners? That is something which writing this comment has taught me.
look at george! look at him act awkward and out of the loop in between sleeping with models on yachts! what a good actor.
ha, right? he really had to channel his inner george gloomy for this one!
This looks like it was totally filmed in Kailua or Kaneohe, on Oahu Island, HI. I know this because my parents live there, and I will probably have to hear about whatever minor experiences they had around the production of this movie that they won’t remember they had until they see a trailer for it and I’m there to talk at.
Is that a complainbrag? sort of.
I find it highly unbelievable that George Clooney would have any kids that he knows of.
Isn’t Alexander Payne the guy who gave us naked Kathy Bates? Screw that guy!
Nothing says “I’M WHITE” more than having the print from a Hawaiian shirt as the background to your credits.
Honestly, this trailer is improved 1000 times when you imagine it is very elaborate viral marketing for Old Navy.
Okay, i’m so sick of movies that give children some kind of other-worldly parenting knowledge, to the point that they can successfully diagnose and critique what the adult is doing wrong. It takes a level of maturity to figure out parenting that angsty kids cannot fathom.

It wouldn’t surprise me if super-worldly children is just something that is plausible for rich filmmakers for being an actual more frequent occurrence among rich people– that is, a lot of being a conventional kid is about having severe limits on one’s universe– both in terms of what is allowed to experience and how one is allowed to behave– which is a system I could see breaking down once one reaches certain echelons of wealth and where particular forms of parental anxiety become less meaningful.
Does anyone know if they need a movie poster? I just made this and am willing to part ways with it for a rather modest price.

the running in flip flops scene is killing me. such the quirky serious movie cliche move.
I feel like “running toward you wife’s lover in flip-flops” is almost officially the new “running away from the killer in heels,” like, good job movies, that is exactly how the world happens, thumbs-up.
exactly. can i get a movie like this where the people’s actions are actually believable? nobody has ever run in flip flops in the rain to find out who their wife is fucking, ever. “i didn’t take the car because i just didn’t think of it. it has nothing to do with the fact that the director thought it would be a ‘cool’ moment where like, the crowd is totally amused, but also sympathizing with my plight.”
it will never be outdone by the Clive Owen flipflop scenes in Children of Men. Just the best.
that whole movie is the best.
advice: never watch Children of Men before going to a raging party. It kind of puts a damper on things.
But any other time: the best. (except maybe during a baby shower?)
Alexander Payne is white people’s answer to Tyler Perry.
I don’t get what’s so bad about this movie specifically because they are white actors. If it was a (insert minority here) land baron, would it still be distasteful? I think maybe “Being Rich Is Hard” is more appropriate, since the overuse of this “white people have it easy and shouldn’t, therefore, have fluff movies made about them” thing is getting tiring. I hate even going there, but you know what, Gabe went there first. Most of the movies he uses the line with deserve it, but I don’t think this one does. Just my thought for the day.
Well, the joke is weak, and it predictably ruffles feathers (in America, website trolls YOU) but it does point out the disappointings facts, that that despite the diversification of our society
1) The movie industry still makes a LOT of “serious” movies about white people
2) They make shitty movies about minorities
3) Good indie movies about people of color (like Night Catches Us or Raising Victor Vargas or I don’t know what) are marginal.
Seriously, what are the really good movies about “post-racial america”? Don’t say Crash or I will reach through the internet and slap you.
That’s probably just because Bill Murray happens to be white.
Actually, your comment has made me think that Gabe could institute a Videogum Movie Club: Good Indie Movies About People Of Color Edition, where we watch and then discuss those kind of movies.
Not only would it be fun and help get people to see film that should actually be watched (a rarefied genre, admittedly); it would further benefit him, in that his complaints could then be defended for their supplementary status.
Of course, this is the point in the Internet Comment where I admit I do not know how to increase this happening, except to hope someone very sway- and brain- and $$$- heavy reads and likes my comment, enough to act based upon the content therein.
My problem with these types of movies is that it’s emotional porn masquerading as drama.
What’s your definition of “drama,” though, and how is this not it? I would think that all drama (especially movies that are called dramas) intentionally tries to evoke emotions.
Was that Robert Forester as the old guy who punched the kid in the face? Robert Forester, you guys!
I think this looks pretty good?
im looking forward to the supercut of george’s mournful sighs in this movie. there are 7 in just the trailer!
