Here at http://www.videogum.com, we spend most of the day cracking wise (so wise, we crack the wisest) about the state of pop culture and visual entertainment. It’s our job to come up with snap judgments based on little to no information, and to use those snap judgments to over-enthusiastically applaud or unfairly deride the world’s latest trampoline accidents and TV show trailers. But sometimes a project comes along about which it’s very difficult to form a hyperbolic opinion. What then? Well, if you think it’s so easy to blog all day (it’s really, really easy), why don’t you do it?
There are two new trailers out for Christmas-themed thrillers today and I cannot for the life of me figure out which one is more insane. One is for a horror movie called The Children, and the other is for a revenge thriller called While She Was Out. Both trailers after the jump.
The Children
While She Was Out
They both have their precedents. The Children, of course, has echoes of Children of the Corn and Macauley Culkin’s The Good Son and a million other movies in which fear is generated with a jack-in-the-box soundtrack. While She Was Out carries on the historical tradition of The Brave One and Enough. But it’s hard to decide which one is more insane. I would lean towards While She Was Out, just for the line “I’ve got a gun, how’s about I aim it at your pussy first?” That line should probably go to the hospital and have a CAT scan. But it’s impossible to count out The Children, with its sled-throwing and fork-stabbing. It looks very, very insane.
You figure it out, Professor.

While She Was Out is pretty disappointing. It starts out really well, very real and very tense and turns into a typical, unbelievable one-woman-killing-machine tale. Eden Lake takes a similar premise (evil teens terrorising someone in the woods) but does it a 100 times better.
i only watched the trailer for “the children” so while i can’t comment on which one is more insane, i will say that “the children” has inspired me to add one more reason why i don’t want kids.
reason 37: i brought the kid into the world, and it could take me out.
looks like a lame version of the omen (the original, not that julia stiles bs).
I only blog in malformed haiku now:
*These kids are bastards
Their motive is likely FAIL
Just kill them who cares
*Kim can’t kill them all
Suspension of disbelief FAIL
My dog could write this
wait, they’re trying to kill her because she put a note on their car? that really doesn’t make a lot of sense…
Tough choice. For me, Children comes close with its tagline, but While She Was Out wins for the overwrought use of the choir singing “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”. Yikes.
Is Kim Basinger killing from the dead? I’m very confused. Until this matter is cleared up, I refuse to blog. The world waits.
the second one is way more insane. mostly because we see some guy’s brains blown out in the preview. way graphic for a trailer! who the hell thought that was a good idea? anyway, makes me think there’s a lot more of that in store.
and movies about creepy kids no longer faze me.
That note must of been real fucked up.

this should be Videogum’s mission statement: put this #%&$ in the about me.
and ps…the second one
“Because slipping an incendiary note underneath my wipers is an invitation to war to me and my soldiers!”
Seriously?! The second one is clearly more ridiculous based on that line alone.
I predict both will be added to your worst films list soon.
As for me, I doubt I will ever watch The Children & I might rent While She Was Out just cause I think that kid who was in Lady In White is pretty darn cute.
I don’t even know, fellow!) continued to write in the same vein, it is interesting people!
