So, I got this email last night:

Hi, this is Tang, I’m more of a lurker than a monster, but I am definitely a dedicated videogumer. I hope this isn’t too forward/too random but I am desperate, and so these are my desperate measures. My mom is dying of breast cancer that’s metastasized into skin cancer. You don’t need a sob story, and I feel really awkward telling you one, but literally the only thing I can do for my mom is try to get her to win this Honorary Breast Cancer Bat Girl for the New York Yankees (why anyone wants to be a Breast Cancer Bat Girl… whatever, it’s what she wants). So to win, you have to get people to vote for you on mlb.com. The link is http://mlb.mlb.com/sponsors/komen/index.jsp and she is Eileen F. (if you click the alphabetical drop down, and click e…. you get it). So, what I’m asking of you, is to consider tweeting the link, asking people to vote for her. Just think about it, and I will really appreciate it. This means a lot to her, and so has become essential in my mind. Anyway thanks either way.

-Tang

As you know, the mission statement of Videogum Everywhere is to bring joy to people’s lives by leaving them alone. We are like that sign at the entrance to national parks that says “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints,” except without the pictures or the footprints. One could argue that by making this a Videogum Everywhere mission, we are getting in the way of other people who are competing for this honor, all of whom are probably more than deserving. But how about just this once we break this rule. How about just this once we bring joy to people’s lives by bringing joy to their lives. Agents! Let’s goooo! Let’s voooooooote!

  1. Awwww. This really sweet! Sorry about your mom, Tang! I hope the Monsters make her dreams come true!

    • Next we should help the Nigerian Prince who emailed me about his money troubles

  2. Whoa, hold on a second. How am I supposed to vote for Eileen F before I’ve heard her stance on child slavery?

  3. Tang:

I once wrote to Mcfarlane toys, telling them that I was a soldier going to Iraq, and that I wanted to know if it was possible to get an action figure made of me so that I could give it to my son in case I didn’t return. This was not true. In reality, I was bored and wanted to make myself go on a Godzilla-style rampage through a peaceful Lego village. Those heartless bastards didn’t know I was lying, though, and they denied my request anyway.

I know how it feels to have your dreams denied, and in this case it is all the more poignant, because it is free from deceipt and manipulation. Your mother has my vote, and when I get home today, she will have my vote again. I really hope she wins the vote. Really.

  4. Consider your request Twittered and Facebooked, Tang! Go Mrs. F!!

  5. I have a habit of being overly earnest when I think things are fantastic, and then weirding people out with my declarations of awesome, but that does not stop me from doing it. I do not think that the cancer is awesome, but doing something right-on for someone who is going through crud times is very awesome. Good luck, Tang’s mom! (With everything, of course, but right now – with this thing that we can maybe help happen).

  6. if i can stop wasting time on the internet and do something a tiny bit helpful which makes a dent in the amount of time i’m wasting on the internet not doing anything a tiny bit helpful to anyone, then yes, being a human being achieved!

I will vote on all the computers in my tiny and sad campus office and RT to all of my 27 followers (nbd).

Good luck mrs/ms tang. good thoughts your way.

  7. I don’t know why this story in particular has broken my two year streak of not commenting (except for that one day Becca guest-blogged), but it has. I voted. Yay for nerds coming together and making good things happen for people who deserve it.

  8. Well, in Gumville they say that Frank Lloyd Wrong’s small heart grew three sizes that day.

  9. Two sports related posts in as many days? Where do I submit my hover-resume to be editor of Sportsgum?

  10. It’s a good thing that Gabe framed this as a breaking of the rules, because that is the only time I help other people, when it means breaking rules.

  11. Done. Good Luck Tang and Eileen F!
My Bro is very near the end of a battle w/ stage 4 colon cancer and we are right now trying to hook him up with a trip to see the Yankees at the new stadium . We were raised in the the Bronx, and i remember my uncle, who was a NYC cop, sneaking us in for the World Series to see Reggie Jackson and the boys do their thing. Good Times!!!

  12. Voted, and I’ll vote when I get home. Best to you and your family, Tang.

  13. I voted sticker.jpg

Also, can I be the Grumpire? I feel pretty Grumpirey today.

  14. Voted, and best wishes. You should submit an avatar to replace the shadow question mark…it may help.

  15. I voted for her. Although being a Yankee fan is like being a huge fan of fascism.

  16. I voted, too! This is very sweet, Tang. I hope your mom is feeling okay and that we can help her in some small way. Goooo Eileen F!

  17. I voted like 40 times. Do they count each vote?

  18. If someone needs the Lowest Rated Comment of the Week for their EGOT, this is the time and the place.

  19. My Vote and My thoughts are with your mother. Stay strong, Tang.

  20. I voted. I did sort of wish they could have gotten participants and pulled a number out of a hat or something though. It seems so weird to be like, “Hey everyone, read these really sad stories. The most popular person with cancer wins!” Unless Tang’s mom wins–then I’ll be OK with this voting system. (I will also accept them bringing every woman out onto the field and announcing that they are all honorary bat girls.)

    • Totally agree. Reading through some of those stories, your heart breaks and you want ALL of them to win.

C’mon MLB. You play, like, a jillion games a year. You can do something special for all these women.

Meantime, Tang, your mom’s page is situated at the front of my browser, and I’ll be giving her a ton of votes throughout the day. Best wishes and good luck to both of you.

  21. Tang! Where are you?! Best of luck to your mother and go Yanks!

  22. Voted! And a suggestion: she should upload a photo so it’s more eye-catching / more likely that she’ll get clicks and votes. Right now that generic pink MLB logo just sort of blends in with the other entries, so it’ll help her chances (I think) if there’s a photo.

Best wishes to you & your mom.

  23. I find it really distasteful when people refer to others as “good people” (as in “That monster? He’s good people.”) but I think it really applies in this case. Good job guys!
Also, I have a meeting at 3 but other that that I’m pretty much voting for this all day.

  24. done and tweeted! good luck Eileen F!

  25. also you guys keep in mind that sometimes a site running a contest like this will notice a huge spike in votes, and if it seems like there are multiple votes coming from the same IP address, they might suspect bot-voting or some other shady thing and disqualify that entrant. So be careful, don’t go nuts clicking vote a million times over and over again, it might actually backfire and get her kicked out of the contest.

  26. Voted! Best of luck to your mom, Tang.

  27. Voted – Good luck Eileen F.!

  28. voted! good luck, hope all the monster votes help your mom win!

  29. That was v easy aaaaand….voted! Good luck Tang and Eileen F.

  30. Voted! Hope your mom wins and, more importantly, gets healthy soon!

  31. just got ‘er dun.

  32. I think I’ve voted like 20 times. I hope they’re all going through.

  33. Wait, so do all those women have some kind of cancer? And does voting for one diminish the chances of the others? And are women with cancer really being made to compete for an opportunity to be something ridiculous and easily accessible that all of them could basically be if someone simply decided so? *hijacks airplane flies into yankees stadium*

  34. Oh my goodness. Thank you all so much! I only just saw this- yesterday I worked at my non-desk job. This is really incredible. Since I am now temporarily in charge of karma I give you all 1000 years good karma! I really can’t say how much I appreciate it. I really think she’ll win! Not to get too sappy on an already sappy subject, but not only did you guys really help my mom but you totally made my day after having maybe the worst day ever. I’m in a sticky position being the oldest child, it’s my job to be invisible and helpful and not stress anyone out but it’s been kind of hard being the scapegoat for stress and whatnot (not that I’m complaining too much) but basically what I mean is, I’ve been feeling really lonely and forgotten and this just…. was too much (in the best possible way) YOU ARE ALL WONDERFUL AND I LOVE YOU. Also, this lead to me explaining videogum to my mom, which was hysterical. Anyway y’all brought tears of joy to the Tang family.

Anyway, I don’t know why my dad didn’t put a picture on the bat girl site, but, just so you can put a face to the person you helped out this is my mom and dad:

I will never, ever forget this. Thank you.
