As by now you most certainly have heard, Japan just suffered the largest earthquake 100 years (8.2 or 8.4 or 8.9 depending on where you get your statistics) which generated a massive, 13-foot-high tsunami that swept inland. This is one of those situations where, like, obviously Videogum is not really equipped to deal with such an actual and incredible crisis, and it doesn’t need to be. Our role is altogether outside the realm of ACTUAL HUMAN SUFFERING, or at least I hope it is. Nevertheless, this is such a huge, tragic, impactful thing that it is kind of hard to just post a CGi video of baby pagans holding hands in a circle in a CGi woods as if NOTHING EVEN HAPPENED. Also, have you seen the actual footage of the tsunami wave? Holy moly. I’ve posted a video after the jump and, well, man. Like, sure, the wave is huge, yes, and it is carrying along boats and an impossible flotilla of debris, but also, if you look closely, shit is just on fire? It is an impossible wave carrying entire mountains of FIRE! So, like I said, uh, this is not our strong suit. The Japanese earthquake and tsunami is NOT your boyfriend. But it is definitely something that is happening in the world that seems to demand some kind of recognition, preferably the silent, respectful kind.
That being said, what a bummer, huh? Perhaps the best way for us to show our support for the people in Japan during this genuinely difficult time is not with empty words or ineffectually empathetic statements, but rather with photos of pets taking naps? Like I’ve already said, I obviously don’t know what to do in these situations, and so I leave it up to you. DO YOUR BEST. It is all anyone has ever asked.

“Chasing tails and hissing at cats is great, but pester your roommate to donate! Let’s goooo!” – @iambirddie
So I googled ‘dogs sleeping’ to put a cute picture up here, and the first web result I got was “Letting Sleeping Dogs Lie in Your Bed Can Kill You” COME ON! Tsunami it is
this has to help
I am relieved that Maru is safe.
Is he? IS HE?!
Yep, Maru’s roommate blogged about it today.
It is tough living in a time where we have the combination of massive disasters + all-seeing coverage. Being constantly aware that a massive disaster is inevitably going to reach me and mine makes for an unsettling state of mind.
It makes me less and less thankful that I am not a victim, and more and more sad that we all eventually will become one.
also…….cats I guess. I don’t know.
Thoughts?
this guy knows what you’re talkin’ about
I definitely agree that its super depressing to be reminded of this tragedy 24/7, and that it will eventually happen to all of us one day. BUT, on a different note, as soon as the initial shock wears off, we will start hearing the stories of the human spirit, and how in the face of complete devastation, people can put aside their selfish tendencies and do whatever it takes to help their fellow man. Call me a dreamer, but I think that’s always the beacon of light in times like these.
I don’t know, I mean, it is still vey possible to live you entire life without experiencing a major natural disaster, right? Now it’s entirely possible a major disaster (of any sort I guess, natural or otherwise) will reach ‘you and yours’ som day, and a great number of people do in fact end up living through a Katrina-caliber experience in their lives, but many never experience anything of the kind more than a flood warning or mid-size earthquake.
I don’t want to accuse you of being melodramatic for the sake of it alone, but I do think your comment is a little overreaching.
I would prefer being accused of being melodramatic over overreaching any day. I would rather be It’s A Wonderful Life over being Here After.
On a serious note, you make a good point.
I’m still just trying to precess that video. I mean, you keep expecting the wave to stop and dry out. But it doesn’t. You see the cars desperately trying to get out of the way, some being blocked and having to stop. And then the camera just kind of pan out. And they disappear. Smaller and smaller until you can’t tell car from burning rubble.
I guess what I’m really struck by, and this is true for most natural disasters, is the complete and utter feeling of helplessness. My mind kept repeating “Stop stop stop stop stop stop stop…” but no amount of telekinetic gymnastics can help (unless you’re Jean Grey… or something…).
*sigh* I guess it’s just one of those things. I’m sad.
Seriously, though. This news, and all the hatred in the world, and all the personal struggles we all face on a daily basis just make me feel like this:

I have to admit I came here just to see how Gabe would incorporate the tsunami news. And I have to say…I’m not sure I agree with you a hundred percent on your blog work there, Gabe.
try number 4:

YAYAYAYYYYYYYAYAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
totally worth it
Whoops! Didn’t scroll down to see your success after trying to help! Congrats!
Two things.
First, does anyone else find the Earth just TERRIFYING sometimes. I’m not particularly easily scared over terror threats or whatnot. But the fact that the Earth can just start shaking and tear apart your country really freaks me a little bit. It feels like something from a horror movie when you’re sat in London in an office.
And secondly, when sat in London in an office answering calls all day whilst having the news of such devastation in the background, it really makes you want to punch some people in the face. And I mean the people calling me who shout down the phone because their department is slightly too cold and THEY CAN’T WORK IN THESE CONDITIONS or their coffee was FIVE MINUTES LATER THAN THEY ORDERED AND NOW THEY’VE HAD TO START A MEETING WITHOUT IT! Rarrghhhhhh!!!!!!
These people need to be sent more pictures of pets taking naps (and a big punch of awareness…)
If you look closely, you’ll see my other cat sleeping in the hallway. Two for one!
Is it really sleeping? Because I’m pretty sure I see some glowing devil eyes on background cat. (In a good way! I love me some good cat devil eyes.)
Aw, darn. Guess I didn’t look closely enough!
Okay,
I will offer the hopeful upside. Though this is scary and terrible, it is a testament to Japan’s superb urban planning and infrastructure that more lives have not been lost and not nearly as much has been destroyed as could be. I am proud that people manage to build things in a way that lowers human damage rather than increasing it.
