The news today that President Hosni Mubarak has relinquished his hold over the Egyptian government and fled the country is a tremendous victory for the Egyptian people, an important development in the history of democracy, and an interesting new addition to the complicated and ever changing political landscape of the Middle East. But most importantly it means that the rest of us can finally ENJOY THE WEEKEND. Ugh, remember last weekend how none of us got any sleep or did anything fun or relaxed from the INCREDIBLE stress of our daily lives, because we were all just so worried about what was going on in Egypt? Thank God that’s all over and Egypt’s fine now and there’s absolutely nothing that still needs a tremendous amount of work and restructuring and peacekeeping and diplomacy and humanitarian oversight in Egypt. Back to normal! And you know what that means: BRUNCH! Enjoy it. We earned it. The true heroes.

| Oh, ugh. So sure, there is some sexism inherent in the system, I will concede that much. But it’s not going to go away by complaining about it. First of all, that just validates the belief that MEN (boo hiss) are the ones running things, and WOMEN (yay ovaries) are not in charge of the status quo, which just gives power to the thing you’re trying to be against. How about instead of complaining about women being treated poorly, or men being treated poorly, maybe we just complain when PEOPLE are treated poorly? The idea of “feminism” is a good one in theory, but it still puts the importance of one gender over another. There won’t be equality until people stop seeing things in terms of gender. | ||

[Ed. note: Whoa. I think that Facetaco actually makes some pretty important points about the ways in which fighting for equality can blur the actual issues, and how the more we focus on the divisive aspects of the problems the more divisive they become. That just seems true! And it's something to consider! But I certainly don't agree that "feminism" (why is it in quotes?) places the importance of one gender over another. It focuses on the plight of one gender in order to equalize that gender's position in the world, but that's different than placing a hierarchical value judgement on genders. I'm also pretty sure that not seeing things as being about gender is going to be tough to do when those things are definitely about gender? Like, I have some minor issues with the Tina Fey quote that kicked off that debate, but what she is talking about is the fundamental gender-based inequality in the entertainment industry, which is real, and which can't simply be dismissed as the individual problems of good or bad people. Anyway...congratulations on getting a top 5 comment and a lowest rated comment in the same week, Facetaco. Do you have your EGOT yet?]

I don’t like to toot my own horn, but I would like to point out that I got 17 upvotes on a Stereogum post this week, which I’m pretty sure is a record for Stereogum. We’re not very funny over there.
You should absolutely be tooting that horn like Miles on Bitches Brew (the real # 1 drug album), cause that Verve comment was solid gold. And though I didn’t say anything in the post, I did upvote it multiple times from multiple computers.
There’s nothing funny about indie-rock. Except for Art Brut.
I saw them four times in 2009. I had a few beers with Eddie Argos after his side project played Chicago last summer. That dude is hilarious, and a really nice guy. And he liked my Super Furry Animals t-shirt.
