OK, well, obviously the Community Dungeons & Dragons episode. I mean, obviously. It’s like, ah-no-doy. I think my favorite thing about the episode, besides how it was great, was how much it reminded me of my own Dungeons & Dragons experience. I’ve only played once in my life, and I was 27 years old. Some friends and I realized that we had never played but we thought it would be “hilarious.” (Someone should open a Dungeons & Dragons bar in Williamsburg. I’m only half-joking.) So, we all made characters with stupid names, and we found our one pro-nerd friend who actually had played when he was younger to be our Dungeon Master. The main difference between my experience and last night’s episode of Community is that there was a lot more cheap beer involved in my game. It was kind of like the Assistant Dungeon Master. Anyway, we went on a quest to destroy goblins in a cavern or something, and to be honest, it was super fun. I don’t know why we never played again. Maybe because everyone kept getting annoyed with me because when the quest started, I kept using up my turn in the village, saying things like, “Is there a tavern in this village? Well then I would like to go to the tavern and play billiarden!” Apparently, some people thought I was wasting time, but some of us know the value of getting good R&R before you head out to fight undead gatekeepers.

30 Rock was also great last night. And other shows. Guys? Guys?! Guys!!!!!!!

  1. When Annie performed her sexual moves as Hector the Well-Endowed, I read her lips saying, “I pull out my huge member,” but my brain only received “FuhThump!”

  2. I’m just so happy Parks and Rec is on again. So, so happy.

  3. Andy as a monkey. I LIT’rally laughed out loud.

  4. It is on like Ghengis Khan weaing Sean Jon in Bhutan!

  5. I’ll be catching up on this stuff over the weekend, but I’ll go ahead and assume that Ron Fucking Swanson is going to be the best. Anyone with any Swanson gifs is invited to give them here.

  6. The moment when Jack says “Crap” and the tv cuts to Keeping up with the Kardashians was perfect.

  7. Community was great, but I feel like I was missing alot of the jokes, b/c as my huz told me: “You are not nerdy enough for this episode.” :(

  8. I think this needs some revision

  9. Man the Pawnee town slogans slayed me, but I’m pretty sure Philadelphia is first in friendship, fourth in obesity.

    • Pawnee, the Paris of America. Pawnee, the Akron of southwest Indiana. Pawnee, welcome, German soldiers. After the Nazis took France our mayor kind of panicked. Pawnee, the factory fire capital of America. Pawnee, welcome, Vietnamese soldiers. Pawnee, engage with Zorp. For a brief time in the ’70s, our town was taken over by a cult. Pawnee, Zorp is dead. Long live Zorp. Pawnee, it’s safe to be here now. Pawnee, birthplace of Julia Roberts. That was a lie, she sued and so we had to change it. Pawnee, home of the world famous Julia Roberts lawsuit. Pawnee, welcome, Taliban soldiers. And finally, our current slogan: Pawnee, first in friendship, fourth in obesity

    • I live in Philadelphia. We are definitely NOT first in friendship. (because of all the crime and such)

  10. The volume of my laughter goes up when I watch Community and Parks & Rec because I sub-consciously need to find a way to express how much greater the joy is I get from these shows (as opposed to pretty much any other joy).

Also, I liked the use of fat jokes on Community to get both A. laughter and B. a message across. As opposed to The Office, whose jokes are, “Kevin doesn’t know how to eat vegetables and also: heart attacks.” I love you, Joel McHale.

      • But after he ran to get the candy bar, it didn’t show him having a heart attack. Always look on the bright side of life!

      • I love the master psychopath look on Chevy’s face in this gif.

      • Real Talk? I know there was a message behind Community’s episode last night, but I was super uncomfortable with Pierce’s antagonism specifically when he was yelling “FAT” at Neil.

Perhaps it’s because I have a brother who’s Neil’s size and a bit of a “nerd,” but I don’t think it was just about that. Pierce seems to be much more of an evil foil this season.

I’m hoping that I’m not the only one who has noticed this or who was bothered by this. Anyone?

        • This is poorly worded, but I was having trouble expressing myself here.

        • I also felt that way. At what point do we stop believing that any group of people would keep someone around out of pity or the need for a lightning rod to reduce conflict among the rest of the group? How bad can you feel for a wealthy, slightly over-the-hill moist wipe magnate?
Also, thank you for making an actual comment. I love gifs as much of the next guy. I want a bunch for christmas and all that, but I did actually watch these shows already so I don’t really need a thread that just has every scene replayed over and over again.

          • Thank you so much for replying, you said everything else I was thinking.

I know that as a show there has to be some chaotic or crazy character, but Pierce is just out of control. There’s only so many times you can forgive someone for being that way.

I really hope this goes somewhere becomes a story arc for Pierce to somewhat change his ways, because right now I just really despise any moment he’s on the screen.

        • Ratchet, I agree completely. Last night’s episode left me so conflicted, because 2/3rds of it was the funniest episode of a consistently hilarious series, but 1/3rd of it made me want to crawl out of my skin. I’m sure the intention was that Pierce being an asshole was just him being an asshole, and his fat jokes weren’t funny because they were despicable; but I mean even for Pierce he was being SUCH A DICK and hateful. I feel like in earlier episodes there was at least something there that motivated him, but even him being resentful for feeling “left out” didn’t warrant THAT much antagonism. I dunno.

It should also be mentioned that my girlfriend and I are trying to lose a few pounds, so maybe I felt more sensitive than the norm.

          • I loved the element of the group helping out Neil and doing something just for him, and the D&D aspect was AWESOME! But it’s crazyyyyyy how insane Pierce was being! I just wish there was a better explanation for his behavior.

        • I dunno. I’m fat, and that certainly doesn’t make me an authority on anything, but I’m pretty used to seeing/hearing the fat stuff get thrown around (especially as a woman). So. Like I mentioned, The Office fucking pisses me off–the three overweight people on the show have been the target of lazy fat jokes that pretty much amount to pointing and laughing. Could the episode have been slightly more enlightened? Yes. Just about everything related to overweight people could. (If you’d like to see more of my annoying thoughts on this, see here: http://videogum.com/265631/typical-youtube-video-is-met-with-typical-youtube-comment/webjunk/.)

The thing is, Pierce acts like a child/teenager. His need for attention, his bullying. And when you look at him through that lens, even as a “college” student, the antagonism is preeeetty realistic. The episode showed how damaging that harassment can be and made Jeff and Pierce’s insensitivity look cruel even if common.

          • My main problem, aside from feeling uncomfortable most of the time he talks, is my lack of understanding as to how the rest of the group would stay friends with him or why Troy would continue to live with him

And I know, I know, this whole thread is just an eensy bit silly because it’s a show. Without a constant antagonistic element things would get boring very fast, but it’s come to level that I’m beginning to grow tired of.

And and, I wholeheartedly agree with you about The Office. Those jokes are cheap and I’m sick of them.

  11. I played AD&D as a freshman in high school. My parents are very conservative and they were deeply uneasy with it. My mom had read some article in McCall’s that said it led to suicide and Satan worshipping or something (This was early 90’s). But I also had very few friends and it was about the only socializing with kids my age that I had, so they relented. They even drove me to my friends’ house where I’d spend the night after long playing sessions. I was deeply grateful. My Dungeons and Dragons sessions were some of my favorite memories in high school. Then I moved away and never found somebody who was willing to play it in my new school.

    TL;DR version: Wert was/is a nerd LOL

    • Your story reminds me of the D&D episode of Freaks and Geeks. Which made me cry because it was so sweet. Thanks for sharing. As a kid I thought D&D was incredibly stupid and nerdy. As an adult, I think it’s what really smart, creative kids do.

    • I just started playing a couple months ago at the age of 26. I never got to play in high school because I didn’t know anyone who was interested. I decided to ask a bunch of friends to join, all of whom had never played before, and everyone is really into it!

It is bringing us closer together, and has become a really positive influence in all our lives. You should ask some of the friends you have now to start!

    • I went to D&D summer camps 7th through 9th grade, and I legitimately don’t know if that’s nerdier. (I miss it.)

  12. Bones talk.

    1) Do we really think Booth is going to propose next week?

    2) It was nice to have non-asshole Booth back this episode

  13. i promised a friend of mine to post a new adam scott .gif on her wall each week. help me out, concert_addict!

  14. 1) I don’t think he will, but if he does, it will either A) not be to Hannah or B) if it is to Hannah, she will refuse.
    2) I haven’t found him to be an asshole. I suppose I thought he was just holding back emotionally.

  15. You’re the AT&T of people.

  16. Oh come on! They were supposedly playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, but the 20-sided die wasn’t brought into the game until 3rd edition. Also, in one scene there is clearly a 4th Edition Essentials book sitting in front of Abed, which is completely incongruous with the game they were playing. And what kind of DM does all the dice-rolling himself?

All this pedantic D&D nerdery AND MORE can be found at the Polythene Pam household, every Wednesday at 7.

Also, the eagle sound every time one of the characters died, and seriously all the sound effects this episode, were kind of amazing.

  17. Great night of TV, to be sure. Although I didn’t think I would have to explain what D&D is to my partner and her friend during multiple commercial breaks. Also, I was finally convinced in the American “innocent until proven awful” system of judicial television sentencing that Perfect Couples is actually a terrible show. Sorry it took me so long, I needed some more evidence.

  18. Hey! The Office was really, really good this week! Heartwarming and funny. My only problem is how the story doesn’t really work when you remember the documentary crew. Like… Jim should have just asked the cameraman to tell Michael why he left. And the cameraman could’ve called someone for Michael. And so forth. The whole thing really falls apart when you think about it too much, but oh well. Still a good episode!

    • Not so much, though, because documentary crews have policies of inaction so as not to interfere with the real-life events. That’s why there are nature documentaries where baby penguins get eaten by other larger animals. Tell me you wouldn’t save a baby penguin if something were trying to eat it.

I was more bothered by the fact that Michael Scott has worked at Dunder Mifflin for 15 years and didn’t know the office phone number.

  19. Everything about Parks & Rec made me die laughing. I especially love that they kept referencing Leslie’s nerdy love for Harry Potter! That’s like 3 or 4 jokes about it now. I think Leslie might be me.

  20. I’ll give someone a dollar for a Abed gnome gif.

  21. I really really wish the dvr hadn’t conspired against me and refused to record Parks and Rec. I rewatched the flu episode to cope with the disappointment.

  22. What all of you said. I had a lot of fun last night with my shows.

  23. Shouldn’t there be a board or pieces or something to Jenga?

  24. Skins? Anyone? No? Okay…
