Movies, you guys. Sometimes they make you laugh and sometimes they make you THINK. Haha. Oh lord. Look, what do you want from me? It’s the middle of December. I might be dead tomorrow, you never know. I’ve put together a Top 10 List of my Favorite Movies of 2010. You know why? BECAUSE THAT IS MY JOB. Take a look! How’s my driving, etc. Perhaps you agree with me and perhaps you disagree with me. That is called America. Speaking of America, this is the land of milk and PRIZES, and that is why anyone who shares this list with their friends on Facebook, either by clicking “like” or by clicking “share” will be eligible to win a $50 Amazon Gift Card. (ANOTHER $50 Amazon Gift Card. NOT the $50 Amazon Gift Card that I told you about yesterday. Wowowowow!) Perhaps you want to share this list with someone with the added comment “this jerk made a bad list that I hate.” Fair enough. You might still win a prize, who knows. There is no disqualification for FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Now, admittedly, it might seem like we are trying to buy your Facebook likes, but that’s actually not true. It is an homage to 2010′s The Social Network. We are only trying to buy ONE of your Facebook likes at an EXORBITANT PRICE. It’s just that you won’t know which one until later. Is that part of the fun? Sure? Let’s just talk about the Best Movies list now! Movies! I’m so tired.

  1. I have not seen ANY movies in 2010. Seriously. None. Not even Avatar.

But I “liked” this list because it’s you, Gabe, and because $50 can get my three young kids a LOT of creamed corn on Amazon.

    • You buy your garmanbozia from Amazon? I had no idea that was even an option!

    • avatar came out in 2009, brainiac

      • If Gabe can put Fantastic Mr. Fox on his list of 2010 movies, I can call Avatar a 2010 film.

      • He didn’t say he hasn’t seen any movies that CAME OUT in 2010. Just that he hasn’t seen any movies in 2010. I haven’t seen Avatar this year either, have you, Steve?

        • No, but he has watched Gummo every day from 4:00-5:29.

        • @ face taco, I have no desire to see avatar. everybody’s all like “oh the story’s kinda lame but it looks SOoooo goooooood…” No it doesnt it looks like CGI jpeg ass. It looks like a bunch of floating gif files and other animated computer things and that just sucks so much ass. Fuck.

          • “It looks like a bunch of floating gif files and other animated computer things and that just sucks so much ass.”

Steve, I’m quoting this response the next time my dad asks me if I’ve seen it yet. He even gave me a copy of it when it came out on DVD, and I’m like, “No thanks, Dad”.

          • Can I hazard an agreement with ya Steve? Avatar was a silly movie. My friends have also told me that I HAVE to see it in 3D cuz that makes it SOOO GOOD, but I take a drag on my pipe, readjust my monocle and tell them, “If a movie is only good because of the special effects, it’s a CRAPPY MOVIE”.

Also, Avatar makes me sad forever because now we will never get a film version of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ excellent, slightly racist, but mostly excellent, Barsoom chronicles. If you haven’t read them, it’s basically avatar with green people and red people.

          • No argument there, Stevers. The only movie I’ve ever watched based solely on visual style was The Crying Game.

        • Thanks, facetaco, for the defense. By the way, Avatar came out on December 18th, 2009, just two weeks before 2010. Sorry, Steve-O, for not consulting IMDB before posting. I know details are important to everyone.

    • Really? Not one movie? Maybe movies just aren’t your thing… Consider spending your time pursuing other mediums of amusement.

    • Same here. I didn’t even see Inception (as a result, I don’t get half of the jokes on this site. Being that the other half of the jokes are Arrested Development references, I get no jokes). I did, however, see Harry Potter twice because it was the tits.

    • I thought I was the only one. I have an aversion to committing 2 hours to a movies, yet I can sit and watch 12 straight hours of a TV series.

  2. And anyone who recently disactivated their facebook can go cry now

  3. am i doing it right

  4. Restrepo is the best movie of the year easily.

  5. I’m not even sure what is going on in this thread but if Animal Kingdom is not mentioned than it is a bullshit list. My #1 this year.

  6. You forgot something…

  7. I was going to maybe go see that Owl movie tonight at the dollar theater, but it’s not on this list! It was good, though, right? I mean, $1 good?

    • Yeah, I just watched it the other night and was surprised at how good it was. It was clearly a kid’s movie, but not the kind that feels the need to pander to or talk down to the audience (except for that one musical montage with a RIDICULOUSLY out of place song). I really wish I had seen this in the theater in 3D, the animation is so good. Also, I had a lot of fun playing the “who’s famous voice is that?” game.

  8. Since this is a movie related post, I think this is a good place to say how shocked I am to NOT have seen the “Assasination of Yogi Bear” video as a post.

  9. I would’ve like this better if it had 250 movies edited montage-style for 6 plus minutes.

  10. Seriously Gabe, how could you leave out Valentine’s Day & Predators? Topher came out with TWO movies this year and you didn’t pick either????

    NEVER FORGET!

  11. I don’t get it? Like, is the THIRD Jackass movie in a row really the most interesting and original film of the year? Is this haha-so-funny-movies-are-goofy, or does Gabe’s penchant for nonfiction really skew that far into parody? Admittedly, some good movies are included, but was Step Up 3D really a bigger “oh, they’re just having fun, movies are goofy” win than Ironman 2 or Transformers 3 or whatever? (I am literally asking, because I didn’t see any of them). And also admittedly, 2010 was not a great year for movies. Avatar came out last year and it was still the only movie with any buzz this year, and it was not great in the first place. And admittedly finally, all of the “best movies” tend to come out in December/January bbbbbuuuuutttttttt stilllllllllll… this is weird. I liked it anyway, though!

    • I disagree that this year was not a great year for movies. Black Swan, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The Social Network, 127 Hours, Inception, Toy Story 3 and Animal Kingdom were all GREAT movies. The Town, The Fighter, I Love You Phillip Morris, Mother, Exit Through The Gift Shop, The King’s Speech, Harry Potter, Cyrus and Kick-Ass were all Very Good movies. And I still haven’t seen True Grit, Winter’s Bone, The Ghost Writer, Please Give, Blue Valentine and I Am Love, which are all apparently GREAT or Very Good.

And regarding your comment about buzz:

Didn’t Toy Story 3 make A BILLION DOLLARS and become the highest grossing animated film of all time this year? Didn’t everyone you know mention something about The Social Network at some point this year? Wasn’t Inception a HUGE hit that outperformed everyone’s expectations and had many people going to the theater 2 or 3 times to see it?

It seems like there was quite a lot of buzz around those 3 movies this year, not to mention the buzz that seems to be building currently for Black Swan.

  12. I hate to be professor contrary, over here and maybe it’s because I saw it on a 12 hour plane flight from Europe, but I thought Winter’s bone was this, but for adults:

    • You have my axe, Notsewfast.

    • Not to get all professor movies, because I generally don’t even get half of the smart things people say about movies, but I thought Winter’s Bone was less about the plot and more about the window into a world which I knew absolutely nothing about and was extremely engrossing. The atmosphere and setting of the movie was so unlike anything I’ve experienced in real life or movies, and the anticipation for something to boil over when she kept sticking her nose in people’ business was enough to keep me engaged throughout. And the acting was pretty great.

  13. Good list, very critical.

    • I appreciate the sincerity in the list. It’s easy to go “Oh well, Uncle Boonmee gave such a unique vision into what movie could be and Le Blue duh Blah was such a refreshing take on post-blah blahdernism”, instead of stating “I liked this. It was funny”.

That being said, I enjoyed Inception, Dinner For Schmucks, The American and Harry Potter, but I haven’t seen enough movies to make a full list.

  14. If this comment makes the Monster’s Ball this week, I will give the $50 Amazon gift card that I am bound to win in this contest to werttrew, in appreciation of his vgum contributions. If I don’t win the gift card, I’ll give werttrew a $15 Amazon gift card anyway.

I, too, can buy your love (hate?) with shiny prizes

Send your thumbs this way, guys!

    #shamelesspromotiongum

  15. Clearly, Gabe has forgotten to mention 2010′s greatest cinematic triumph:

  16. The only problem I had with Toy Story 3 was the part where they all held hands and ACCEPTED DEATH in the burning trash pit. Nightmares. I will wait to see The Social Network due to my anger at the website that it’s supposedly based on has robbed my status as a “hard worker” from 7–5. Inception was really good and I am glad that I waited until all the hype died down (“it’s like the Matrix + Heat but better!”), and I cannot wait for True Grit. I like mine regular.

    • YES. I thoroughly enjoyed “Toy Story 3″, but I would call it less “a pleasure” and more “alternately terrifying and tear-inducing”. I mean, whenever I watch a children’s movie I fully expect to cry at least once, but the scene in the trash pit was intense for me as an adult; I can’t imagine how a child would react to it. But still, genuinely great movie.

    • A Prophet is better.

  17. no 127 hours?

    • 127 hours is probably second best movie after Restrepo IMO*

*IMO stands for In My Opinion, FYI**

**FYI stands for For Your Information

      • I actually did not know what IMO stood for, and I’ve been meaning to google that shit for literally years and just haven’t. And I bet IMHO stands for “In My Humble Opinion” right? Shit. Mind=blown, so sarcasmo.

  18. 1) Enter The Void
    2) Toy Story 3
    3) The Social Network
    4) Scott Pilgrim
    5) Black Swan
    6) Inception
    7) Let Me In
    8) 127 Hours
    9) Dogtooth
    10) Mystery Team

  19. Exit Through the Gift Shop? Deserves better than just an honorable mention.

  20. But more importantly, what are Birdie’s favorite movies of 2010? She’s the celebrity now.

  21. 1. Black Swan
    2. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
    3. The Social Network
    4. Inception
    5. Toy Story 3
    6. 127 Hours
    7. Animal Kingdom
    8. The Fighter
    9. Exit Through The Gift Shop
    10. Mother

    Honorable Mention:
    I Love You Phillip Morris
    Cyrus
    The King’s Speech
    Kick-Ass
    The Town

  22. For me, A Prophet, was hands down Best Movie of the Year. Nothing else even came. (Although we’ll have to wait for True Grit).

    Other noteworthys:

    Jackass 3D
    Winter’s Bone
    Toy Story
    Inception (minus the plot)
    Black Swan

So yeah, essentially half of Gabe’s list. Good job Gabe! You sure know your monsters!

P.S. NOTHING will ever be the new “I drink your milkshake.” (Plainview 4 Lyfe)

  23. Did anyone see Public Speaking? Its the documentary about Fran Lebowitz directed by Martin Scorsese. Its really good. Fran Lebowitz should be a Monster god.

  24. In NY mag, Matthew Weiner said “Jackass 3D” was his “favorite thing” this year. I don’t know if I can bring myself to watch it though. “Antichrist” sat next to my DVD player for three weeks before I finally worked up the courage to pop it in.

  25. Ughh I LOVED A Prophet. Seriously watch it, so good.

    • This thread has seriously improved. Let’s hear it for A Prophet! Beaten to the best foreign language oscar by a fucking lame melodrama from Argentina.

  26. If you can put Fantastic Mr Fox in your best movies of 2010 list then I can get away with it too! I have probably watched that movie 1000 times and I feel ridiculous admitting all the things I know have related to it (UK McDonalds toys!).

  27. The best thing about Gabe’s list of the 10 best movies of 2010 is that it includes 13 movies, 5 of which he hasn’t seen and 1 that came out in 2009. I’m dead serious – that’s why it’s the best list.

  28. Anyone else not like Winter’s Bone? I didn’t believe anything that happened in that movie. It was so contrived. Especially that last shot where the kid is playing the guitar and everyone is looking at nothing so seriously and the sun is setting. Puke. That said, I think my favorite movie this year was How to Train Your Dragon. It was so sweet and funny.

    • Well, I didn’t grow up in the backwoods of Missouri, but the story seemed pretty credible to me. Probably due in large part to the very good acting happening everywhere in that movie. Then again, if John Hawkes were in How to Train Your Dragon, I would probably describe that movie as “indelibly true to life, hardly can be called fiction.”

    • See A Prophet.
