You guys, I really enjoy the holidays. They are so fun! Why not? LIGHTEN UP! I’m also a very big fan of televised Christmas specials. Last night’s episodes of TV were NO EXCEPTION. In much the same way that The Simpsons has cornered the market on Halloween specials, I really think The Office does some of its best work on these shows. It’s the perfect combination of that show’s silliness and earnestness. Although, watching last night’s Rainn Wilson-directed, Mindy Kaling written show, I am starting to wonder how on Earth Michael Scott has not been fired yet? There are laws against exposing an HR representatives romantic and sexual history in front of the entire office before petulantly slamming the door, right? And when he threw all the food in the trash it made me very upset somehow. 30 Rock was great, no duh, and it was an episode that also made you THINK, mostly about why you don’t see more WOMEN IN BLACKFACE. Also, Elaine Stritch, you guys. If I was Elaine Stritch I would mount a one-woman show called “Betty White Can Suck My Dick.” I suppose the winner of the night was Community, and make no mistake, their animated Christmas special was a real treat, although I almost felt bullied into loving it. There was so much HYPE and TALK about it before it aired. If NBC really wanted to celebrate the true meaning of the season they would have SURPRISED US. This kid knows what I’m talking about. Oh well. I enjoyed it. I enjoy everything these days! Don’t worry, January 1 and it’s all frowns and shouting I’m sure.

Guys? TV?

  2. Everyone please get me this for Chrismukkah

    • please let this become a real book, “Sterling’s Gold” style.

      • No, actually. At least not like that book. I received Sterling’s Gold a couple days ago, courtesy of Videogum. It’s really, really terrible. It’s one of those books that each page is like two sentences blown up to 64-point font? Where 85 percent of each page is blank? It’s like they had six pages of actual material and had to pack in as much filler as they possibly could.

        • also heard it was just quotes from the show – which led me to cancel the order for our library. thought it was actually gonna have something new and insightful and amazing and derb.

        • I work in advertising and let me tell you, every time I change agencies I get handed a book (usually self-published but not always) that is essentially “The Wisdom of Our Founder.” It is always placed in my hands with reverence as if it is the Torah and I am religious. It is always described in hushed tones: Read this, it changed my life; keep it on your desk. And then it is always 64-pt font with shoddy art direction, and the wisdom is always stuff like:
Always be honest. If you lie, people will know.
Never lose your sense of humor! If you can laugh, you’ll be welcome wherever you go!
We are here to sell for our clients. Never forget that simple truth.
          Imagination + Interaction = Image(TM<)
What sets us apart? Deep Synergy.(TM)

    • Wow, you had that on call. Well done.

    • This book is ridiculous. Everyone knows that witches can’t raise children like a good moral werewolves.

      • That’s not a witch. That’s you.

      • I’m just gonna post this down here, because it seems that posts on my self indulgent thread above are receiving some serious downvotage.

SO, in summary, I understand that the preceding posts were obnoxious and deserving of hate. Apologies fellow monsters, no offense meant, and none taken. I will take my lumps with my head held high.

    • Wait a minute, are we doing “Sterling’s Gold” for Bookgum? We absolutely should…

    • on a related note, could someone buy me this?

  3. community’s christmas special was my favorite thing on tv all year.

    Troy and Abed in stop-motion!

  4. I am so sad b/c my local NBC affiliate bumped Community and 30 Rock for some stupid press conference! UGH!!!!!!!!!!! So I have to watch them on Hulu tonight.

However, I saw the Office and I thought it was a really good episode. Concert Addict, can I get a gif of Jim beating up the snowmen?!

  5. Community is basically the Newsradio of this decade, and I mean that as the highest of compliments.

  6. Aloof, detached, distant, Bjork

  7. Shirley can SING

  8. Community episode was absurdly good. Teacherfriday house, 8:27 last night: 30 year old man crying into his adult beverage because of clay puppets. I ain’t even care.

  9. I L-O-V-E-D Community, it had a special resonance for me this year since one of my parents (and one of my grandparents) will not be spending Christmas with me for the very first time in my life. However, I regret that I watched the heart-warming Community before the dream-crushing Bones. Don’t get me wrong–Bones was good, but holy Lord, it made me SO SAD. Britney gets it:

  10. I actually teared up at the end of Community. Then my husband teased me about it. True story.

  11. Kevin was killing it on The Office last night.

“That would be impressive if anyone knew what a comptroller was.”

  12. They really nailed Joel McHale’s forehead on that clay puppet.

  13. The Mentaliz won the night for me.

  14. Aww, Poor Abed, you made me become too emotionally invested in a fictional character. His mother, you guys, stone cold grinch.

    • I can’t remember the exact phrasing of her christmas card, but that woman was NOT letting Abed down gently.

      • I actually took that to be an exaggerated form of the letter. Since the whole thing was based in Abed’s imagination, I took it to be the way he interpreted the letter, instead of what it really said.

On the other hand, if his mother is that hardcore uncaring, that could explain why Abed is the way he is.

  15. The Spirit of Christmas being the Lost season 1 DVD was pretty much the most perfect thing ever.

“Somewhere out there Tim Burton just got a boner”

    • Wouldn’t it have been great if Lost had done a Christmas episode one season. Like Locke wakes up Christmas morning and…THERE’S A BRAND NEW DHARMA INITIATIVE VIDEO! But who brought it? He stands up to look around and sees nothing, but can only hear the faint jingle of bells and a distant “ho ho hooooooo…Merry Christmas!!!”

  16. I could be sitting at the corner table of the Kmart Cafe!

  17. Can we please talk about how much Community has evolved since last season, from a standard (but still hilarious) sitcom into something much more. I can’t remember the last time ANY sitcom has resonated with me on an emotional level, but Community has done that two weeks in a row. Every single thing about that show is done exactly right. The actors are perfect, the writers are perfect, even the set and props departments are above and beyond anything else on television. The ability to develop characters and display emotional depth without sacrificing comedy is something I’ve never seen done successfully on ANY show, much less a half-hour sitcom format.

    • The episode where Pierce’s mom died and they listen to her recording in the car was insanely well done, and I love how they are able to jump from pretty heartwarming, affecting stuff (that manages to not be cheesy, oddly enough) and then right back into laugh out loud jokes in a matter of seconds.

      • And of all people, I guess Caitlin Ryan WOULD know a thing or two about good television. Just need better choices in men, that Joey Jeremiah is no good.

    • completely agree, though i would argue that parks and rec managed to do that last season as well. i watch the last two episodes about once a week.

    • Well, and it’s incredibly layered. That episode where Abed’s in the background the whole time delivering a baby? Just spot on, Community, every week. Very rarely does that show miss the mark and really I couldn’t name I time it has.

    • While nothing has reached the heights since I must say….. Simpsons did it.

      • And I’m not saying I don’t love Community. Did you guys realize from when Abed was Robocop that not only since have we built a blanket fort but it was also TROYS BIRTHDAY, can’t wait for that new Paintball episode…

  18. Did anyone see Betty White on the Barbara Walters’ Special? At one point, Babs is like “Finish this sentence: ‘Betty White is…..’” and Betty responded with “overexposed.” I’ve never been a Betty hater, but I thought Gabe would actually like that. She’s totally aware how stupid this whole hoopla is.

Also SOLID night of NBC comedies but WOOF the new “Perfect Couples” looks BAD.

    • I want to give it a chance cause of Olivia Munn, but seriously. Olivia Munn?

    • Olivia Munn is the worst and I hate her. But at least I am relieved to see her (potentially) not doing something that is all “Hey look at me, I am a hot girl, but also I am on a videogame talk show, so that means I’m a nerd, so WORSHIP ME, NERDS.”

      I really don’t like her.

Also, my name is Olivia. As a general rule, other Olivias are never a good thing, unless we’re talking about Olivia the Pig, cause she is adorable.

      • Not even Olivia Benson?

      • I totally get what you’re talking about. Full disclosure, I was introduced to her as the hot videogame chick. But I know, I KNOW, that she is funnier than people let her be. Even the Daily Show hasn’t been throwing her much stuff, but I’m always satisfied with what she does do on it. So yes, I will defend Olivia Munn until I give up on her, and continuing with my point in my last post, that may be with this stupid looking show. :-/

      • Did you see the episode where another student named Olivia joined her class, and there was chaos because of it? That pretty much sums up what you’re saying here.

P.S. I know the plotlines of episodes of Olivia.

        • I don’t have cable or anything, the only reason I know of her is from my mother, who buys me, her adult daughter, all sorts of plushies and kids books because Olivia the Pig is so cute.

But that situation happened to me in high school. Eventually the other Olivia went to another school. I won.

  19. ‘Happy Holidays’ is what terrorists say.

  20. Is it sad that the only way I can feel like its christmas time is through TV specials?

  21. Community was amazing last night. I wish I could have turned into a claymation character so I could give him a hug, because aww.

P.S. Favorite line in IASIP: “You mean sperm doesn’t eat the egg, grow strong and become a baby?”
That’s exactly how I will explain baby-making to my future children.

    • Sunny has been really great too. The Gang has really been showing some heart lately, what with Charlie’s fake birthday and ‘Dee’s’ baby. They really come together in a dumb/sweet way. And the Kate Bush (cover) was SUPER sweet. My heart had almost re-frozen after 30rock but it promptly melted again. And then they showed the pic of baby AXEL aww……

      • It was SO CUTE! Especially because of the extra long shot of Mac looking at Dee as she came out, which couldn’t have been accidental.

And then it back to being It’s Always Sunny.

  22. i gotta say all the episodes were fantastic, i really loved always sunny… especially bringing back all the characters like lil kev

but the highlight of the night for me was the parks and rec previews
andy: “im typing your symptoms on this bar, and its telling me u might have a network connectivity problem” hilarious

  23. Alright. I’ll say it. I was underwhelmed by the Community episode. It just wasn’t that funny to me. I really wanted it to be too. :-(

30 Rock totally won in my heart. The Mentalist stuff was so funny. SO funny.

    • BOOOOOOO!!!! GO BACK TO YOUR CAVE ON MT. CRUMPIT, GRINCH!

    • Gotta agree with you there DSN. Most nights Community usually produces just as many laughs as 30 Rock, but last night’s laugh count leaned heavily on the 30 Rock side (this is how i rate my life experiences, in number of laughs). However, as Gabe often does, you gotta give Community the credit for being so ambitious. I thought it was a really well executed episode, and it played by its own rules of the claymation/group therapy/planet abed (unlike Inception). Also, i appreciated the fact that they didn’t autocorrect the voices when they attempted to sing -it would have resulted in alot of Glee-esque “Oh, brother..”‘s

Also, I should mention DSN, that I absolutely love your avatar. In fact, I made it my cell phone wallpaper a few weeks ago, before I dropped my RAZR into a puddle. on purpose. thank you.

    • I’m with you DSN.

It wasn’t very good as Community episodes go.

I liked how it was very character driven, and I don’t think you would like it if you didn’t know Abed and the others. And I liked the ending, where christmas has different personal meanings for everyone, which is SO true.

But the gags were kind of lame and it all felt too contrived with the constant repetition of how this is all just in Abed’s head. A lot of people said the live 30 Rock episode took away everything they love about 30 Rock, and I sorta feel that way about this community.

Add me to the Debbie Downer list.

    • DSN – I am totally there with ya. And I felt that way with last week’s episode as well. It came to a stunningly downer hault from what started off funny as hell.

True Story: Went to see Joel McHale’s stand up a little while back. For one he came out wearing grossly tight pants, work boots and a baggy tee. So immediately I’m like, Ugh. Then for an hour+ he just did his Soup schtick. I watch you every week Joel(twice a week), I don’t need to hear about the Kardashians when I see you in person too. Every since then, I’ve been kinda Eh about Community.

      • Boo. Sorry to hear that, because I have a huge ol’ TV crush on Joel McHale.

        • Believe me, so did I. That why I was so distraught.

Notspelledbrain – I always wondered how he had time for all of this. Which crossed my mind when he was just doing the Soup and standup dates. The Soup doesn’t seem to break as often as regular shows, so that’s a hell of a lot of work. THEN to tack on Community?

PS. I also pretty much fell asleep towards the end of his act too.

          • I have always watched Community in spite of Joel McHale…McKale? See, I don’t even know.

It is one of my absolute favorites. The big draw was actually “Chevy Chase is on TV? I have to see this.” And nowadays I always forget he’s even on it.

I’m Shirley & Abed, all the way.

      • Well to be fair, he does seem to have a full plate there with Community and the Soup. For one, you don’t see Ryan Seacrest (assuming they’re analogous in # of jobs) doing stand-up -or anything creative in general.

      • Joel McHale was mean to me in High School, And we didn’t even go to HS at the same time (He was like 25), He visited my school and screwed over my big journalism project.

That said, Avery makes 30 Rock the best, if she is in the episode it rivals Community.

  24. The thor rant from Dennis and the Weekend at Bernie’s scene won the night for me. Great season from It’s Always Sunny.

  25. I think Pierce Bear was my favorite person of Community/the night. I LOVED the episode. It wasn’t missing anything for me, but my lack of knowledge of how TV writing really works makes me have the uninformed and probably wrong opinion that they missed out on some good Inception joke somewhere.

  26. Attention Monsters! Can I pleeeease get a GIF of Dwight whipping his head around in the Meredith wig?

  27. i know it’s off topic (sort of of?), but can someone make me a gif of andy from parks and rec trying to jump over the counter on his rollerblades? concert addict?

  28. My heart grew TEN SIZES last night cause The Office was so good!

  29. “Battered women, please be quiet — there’s a man talking.”

  30. Did anyone else notice that Jenna’s boyfriend works at “Wang Tuck’s Noodle Shop”? Subtle LOL.

  31. The best part of Sunny has been the ongoing buildup of lore behind Charlie and Frank’s lifestyle. What the fuck is Nightcrawlers, for example? Now we learn they go ‘clamming’ for lost jewelry in the sewers. Naked. All of it’s off-camera and all of it is presented in such an offhand way. Brilliant.

    • “Babies are the most irritating thing in the world.”
Loved this episode – makes me so happy that Dee and Mac have a baby in real life.

  32. Also: Can Bill Hader please guest on 30 Rock sometime as Alan Alda’s other long-lost son? (See: http://kenlevine.blogspot.com/2010/10/amazing-alan-alda-impression.html).

  33. I felt the same way as Gabe going into Community, but luckily it ended up being PERFECT. Until the end when my girlfriend made fun of me for crying :( .

  34. I am always THE SAD when I have to miss Thursday night TV on Thursday nights, but then I read through this and get all excited to watch it TODAY because the internet is great and I feel all warm and fuzzy again.

  35. The League double episode last night also redeemed itself for last weeks sub-par effort. I really like Jenny a lot, kind of refreshing to see a semi-developed female character in a male dominated show about fantasy football. The scene with Ruxon and Ellie when he was dressed as the elf on the shelf was incredible as well “and while you’re upstairs I’ll call my wolf guy.”

  36. 30 Rock and the Office were definitely the winners last night. Community was very ambitious and certainly admirable, but ultimately didn’t really do much for me. Despite it being stop motion animation, it was pretty boring. Full disclosure: I love Community and have a picture of it in my wallet, that episode just didn’t do much for me. It was more style over substance.

  37. cutty on always sunny speaking in earnest about his lost denim shorts. he was like “yo spider, let me get a word with you son.”

  39. “Who hasn’t made mistakes? I once french kissed a dog at a party to try to impress what turned out to be a very tall 12-year-old.”

    -Donald Trump, The Apprentice finale.

  40. After last night’s episode, I’m ready for Michael not to be on the Office anymore. He’s too much.

  41. Community was soooo good… but you guys… I’m worried about Abed. He should definitely get some help.

Yes, I am concerned about a fictional character.

    • his whole storyline is reminiscent of “the curious case of the dog in the nighttime”

    • 2nding protective feelings for Abed. WTF is wrong with his mother? She needs a smack. And when that mean gay threw a drink in his face last week I think I stood up in shock and anger. “You…can’t do that to him…he just likes to talk about Farscape. :(

  42. Gabe it is a good thing you write such good fanfic b/c all of this unnecessary HATIN’ is enough to make a [not actually] television icon cry.

  43. I’ve never noticed how Rob Huebel looks EXACTLY like Andy from Toy Story before.

  44. I know its not a Thursday Night Comedy, but can we please discuss last night’s Fringe? The marionette was perhaps the creepiest most insane sequence I have seen on network TV in a long time. Black Swan eat your heart out!

    • I thought it was maybe the best Fringe ever. I usually enjoy it, but I tend to find the drama shallow and the mysteries not that much more than freak-show curiosities. But this episode made me sit up and take notice. Olivia’s return had surprising weight to it, the conclusion to which felt organic, fresh and weighty. The mystery portion was terrific; the whole situation was legitimately unsettling and the marionette scene was kind of sublime. It felt like an honest to god Gothic novel.
