I’m going to be honest, you guys. I wasn’t really into the Thursday night TV last night. Shhhhhhh. It all felt a little lackluster, or maybe it has something to do with the knowledge that next week’s episodes are the Christmas Specials, which is when they pull out all the stops, or also just that general tone of this time of year where there’s so much “extra” stuff going on that if you can’t eat something or use it as an excuse to get out of work, then who cares, you know? That being said, I laughed out loud many times at 30 Rock, I plan on sending lots of friends an Andy Bernard-themed “Megan Fox?” texts, and Taco making obituaries for all of his friends on The League, all of whom die in 2014, is obviously the best. Plus: so many special pals on Community! Tig Notaro! Paul F. Tompkins! Not to mention Alison Brie’s pretty great “Annie/Caroline” plotline. It’s not like last night’s shows were bad. COME ON I’M NOT SAYING THAT. They just felt soft. But again: shhhhhh. It’s the season of giving, not complaining. It’s the season of SHUSHING.

Shush it up.

  1. “They just felt soft.” TWSS? TWSS.

  2. i thought community was excellent. there’s something about that show that just hits all the right notes with me.

  3. “What about Brown and Folderson?”

    So good.

  4. also, did anyone else notice that 30 sort of ripped off paul f. tompkins’ ice t. bit with the poorly thought out names for business projects?

  5. “please tell me Harold is a human”

  6. At least Community provided us with another upvote gif! Quick! Concert_addict! Get us a gif of Jeff and Troy giving each other thumbs up!

  7. I thought it was funny that Paul F. Tompkins was on Community, and then 30 Rock kind of stole his “Ice T creates businesses with bad names” joke. Also, I like Seven and Sevens (Shhhh).

  8. So, so, so excited for this:

  9. Dwight’s interaction with Other-Pam warranted several rewatches.

    It won the night.

  10. Was so happy to see Paul F. Tompkins on Community. I love him so.

But my mother said he reminded her of Bill Murray. Thoughts?

  11. 30 Rock wins with a total homeless burn:
“Get a room! Whatever that is.”

  12. Modern Family = best comedy on the network teevee’s

  13. I was actually pretty pleased with TV last night. Danny DeVito’s Elmer Fudd was cracking me up so hard. And I was probably unreasonably happy that Charlie won $15,000 and then spent it all. He deserves it!

    • One of my best friends growing up was a Jehovah’s Witness and for his birthday one year my friend made him a card that said, “Happy I’m-Glad-You-Were-Born Day!”

I would usually just go, “Oh hey, Happy Bir—uhhhhh I mean—hey, it’s nice outside today, huh?” …and he would laugh.

      #truestorygum

      • I’m so stealing Happy I’m Glad You Were Born Day even though I know no Jehovah’s Witnesses, only Scientologists

      • Also a true story, but probably not as funny: my Italian grandmother is a Jehovah’s witness, and before my older brother turned four, she told him that he Jehovah would be watching on his birthday. Who knows how in depth she got, but she definitely made him aware that celebrating birthdays was wrong. At the restaurant with my mom’s family (#child of divorce), they brought out the cake and sang and my brother burst into tears and screamed nonsensically about Johavah.

This grandmother also used to cook a big dinner on Christmas Eve and call it “The 24″ to avoid any suspicion.

    • When it was revealed that Troy’s birthday was Dec. 4, I pointed at the TV, then back to me, grinning. Troy and I are birthday twins.

  14. Can we all just hold hands across America and agree that “The Ballroom” was a brilliant thing to call a bar with an ironically classy and also disgusting name? Thanks.

  15. Adopting a dog so it can watch us make love, and then returning it, complaining it bit our imaginary child, is more than enough for me

  16. Last night’s Always Sunny was definitely the best of the season, maybe just because I’m a Phillies/baseball geek. Dennis and Charlie getting more drunk than Utley and Howard had ever seen anyone (really though? not even Pat Burrell) then using Charlie’s money to drink champagne on a private jet is vintage Sunny.

I’m a huge fan of The League but last night’s episode fell short, I don’t know why, maybe because when they said Pete was born in 1982 I realized all these dudes are the same age as me except way more successful and I dwelled on that to much #oldgum

    • IT’S ALWAYS Sunny was fucking spectacular LAST NIGHT WHICH made it even MORE JARRING when it switched to THE SHITTINESS that is the League. That show STARTED OFF SO good this season, yet the past FEW EPISODE HAVE BEEN sliding downhill rapidly as RANDOM CHARACTER ELEMENTS are added just FOR THE FUCKING SAKE of a one off joke and THEN QUICKLY DISCARDED. UGH, frustrating.

    • Re: Pat Burrell.

Good point. No one outdrinks the machine.

    • The only problem I have with The League, and they do this every so often and last night’s ep was one such occasion, is when they have the characters make RIDICULOUS decisions that don’t make sense to me.

Last night Ruxin pretended he was a widower to talk to fantasy football radio dudes. His wife overhears him and freaks out. He doesn’t go, “No. I’m pretending to be a widower for these radio guys that you can clearly hear me talking to.” Instead, he has to commits to a LIFE LONG lie that we all know is going to lead to some comedy then blow up in his face in about 12 minutes.

Situations like these are what get me hung up on The League, but all their one-liners sweep me away in chuckles.

    • I loved the parallel between Mac eating grass like Charlie and Charlie holding his asparagus and eating it like it was grass. There were definitely bigger laugh out loud moments, but its the little subtle moments that make It’s Always Sunny stand out for me.

      • sorta loved this “THIS IS FOR THE RATS!” callback.

For some reason, Charlie talking about all the rats he’s killed with such remorse in his voice was one of my favorite Sunny moments ever.

  17. RIP Peter Peter Nickle Eater

  18. people can no longer say there is a war on christmas. those ads for next week’s NBC shows have “Christmas” as every other word.

  20. Hey fun news for people (LIKE ME) who haven’t seen Breaking Bad.

    http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-watching/posts/dvr-alert-amc-to-rerun-breaking-bad-seasons-1-3-on-wednesdays-late-night

AMC is going to re-run the first three seasons at odd hours. It’s like they KNEW I just got a TiVo.

  21. I haven’t watched my stories yet, but I’m excited about the Paul F. Tompkinness of Community. In the summer I started following him on Twitter because, um, I’m not really sure, I think because John Hodgman always retweets him. I’d never heard of him. Then he came to do a show in Toronto in October, so I bought tickets purely on the basis that he was a person whose name I’d heard of. It was an amazing show. Paul F. Tompkins: highly recommended by Xave. (And I hear episode 2 of the Pod F. Tompkast is in the works!)

  22. Completely Unrelated but:

  23. Bones talk?

Is Brennan going to make me cry next week?

  24. Kenny “K-Strass” Strasser strikes again on The Office last night.

  25. Texas Annie was so adorable. I wish the bartender had invited her to the ladies room.

And was that Dick Miller sitting at the end of the bar?

  26. I’m thinking about adopting a dog now thanks to 30 rock.

  27. Drunk Jeff and Britta were my favorite parts of the night. The make out scene in the car was great. I need to rewatch that episode just to listen to their background conversations. “THE HURT LOCKER WOULD NEVER WORK AS A RADIO PLAY!”

  28. no joke, Troy’s 21st birthday played out exactly like mine. That was the curse of being the last one of my friends to turn 21 – I ended up driving all of my friends home and going to bed at 11:30 pm.

  29. I’m so glad I have hands, you guys, cause it would be real hard to comment and upvote with my feet!

  30. Five words: I ATE MY FATHER-PIG!

  31. I liked Michael Scott discovering China:
