One of us, and it could have been anyone, really, didn’t watch any of the shows last night because they may or may not (guessing is fun!) have been at a live taping of Nick Kroll’s upcoming Comedy Central special. Nick Kroll, of course, plays Ruxin on The League. Relevant! If you’re at all curious, the answer is yes, he did kill it last night, and yes, his special is going to be great. You should probably get a second DVR installed just in case as a fail-safe measure so that you do not miss it. ANYWAY: I did catch up on some of the shows this morning. Can we all agree that 30 Rock has been phenomenal the past couple of weeks? Like, that is a good show, blah blah blah, it has won Emmys, and it stars Alec Baldwin, and Tina Fey has probably been nominated for some kind of fucking World Favorite Award at this point, such is she beloved, and far be it from any of us to pull some kind of Modern Family Season 1 nonsense and act like this show is somehow an underdog when it is on NBC and millions of people watch it and also all the above stated accolades and cetra. (Seriously, though, what was that all about with Modern Family? How did they manage to convince people that they were some poor struggling upstart instead of a broad, big budget sitcom on a major television network starring Hollywood veterans?) But the point is: 30 Rock is already great, we all are on the same page no duh, but the past couple weeks it has been DOUBLE great, I guess. Meanwhile, last night’s The Office had lots of laffs but was definitely one of those episodes where it’s like, remember when this show made fun of ACTUAL things that happened in REAL offices that were funny because they were RELATABLE? And then you stand in your personal reflecting window and put your hand to your chin because you do remember that now. Saving Community for later, but let me guess: FUNNY!

Your turn.

  1. All right, guys, let’s do this. Bring your guitar and some beer in cans and we will hang out!

  2. Martin Starr, Donnie Wahlberg (that was him, right?), Cutty from the Wire- FX had some awesome guest appearances last night on IASIP and The League.

  3. The sheer ridiculousness of Community is what makes it the best show on tv.

  4. I spent last night watching M*A*S*H re-runs.

Thursday nights aren’t all that exciting chez Bluestockings.

  5. community was incredible this week, especially in the wake of the cancellation of rubicon.

  6. I found it kind of odd that out of the 4 shows I watched, 30 Rock was the only one without some kind of celebrity guest star. (unless you count the cast of Outsourced. #Racist)

  7. Let’s all just agree last night’s Community was pretty much THE J WALTER WEATHERMAN EPISODE.

  8. I laughed and cried a little at the end with Liz Lemon and the pizza. Thanks for reminding me of my Wednesday night, Lizzard

  9. THREAD DERAIL: Should I ADD CARNIVALE to my Netflix QUEUE? I’VE BEEN debating it BUT HEARD mixed THINGS.

ALSO the CHASE SCENE and ending in Community HAD ME FUCKIN rolling. NOT TO MENTION that today is ACTUALLY Latvian Independence DAY. KNOW YOUR FREEDOM!

  10. Bones was SO GROSS. It almost put me off of chocolate.

    Almost.

    • So many gross noises were associated with the chocolate skeleton too.

Can we agree that Booth was kind of an ass there at the end. Maybe Twilly (as her sister always tells her) is very judgmental, but why leave friend birth announcement party to have sex? Why can’t lady friend come to announcement party, then the sex? Maybe it’s setting us up for something…

      • Twilly, I agree. I was mad that Bones let that slide. Friend hos before sex hos, right?

        • I’m glad that a married person agrees with me. Twilly finds she is always a bad barometer for what is acceptable “in-relationship” behavior.

Seriously, Brennan should have bitch-slapped him.

          • Teacherman knows that I’ve known my friends a lot longer than I’ve known him, and if they need me, I’m there. Also: SEX IS POSTPONABLE. If it’s not, find someone else to do it with, am I right?

    • Can I just say that David BONESreanaz is such a creep.

As a Buffy/Angel fan, I was VERY impacted by his sexual harrassment and wife-cheating-on shenanigans. My boyfriend and I were watching a behind the scenes Angel featurette this summer and he even looks like he has been a creep since THEN. We are talking nearly a DECADE of being a creep.

    • I want more Mr. Nigel-Murray backstory! Tell us about Thailand and rehab!

    • am v. sad that i didn’t watch bones until sunday night, so can’t participate in this discussion, and no one will see this. but sweets was extra-sweets in this episode. his water buffalo! sweets!

also, i thought when booth walked away we’d at least get a sad look from bones – that whole thing was strange to me.

  11. 30 Rock won the night for me.

“it wasn’t the feces that troubled me, but the hastily written notes that said ‘help me’”

  12. Family Guy once claimed the word “clemen” was the new popular cuss word in an attempt to get viewers to start saying it, and I thought it was obnoxious.

The League does something like this EVERY WEEK, except it’s a boo-yaw every time. Calling your skeet face your “vinegar strokes” was almost hilarious as the old people music video at the end. Cuz old people are funny and whatnot.

  13. Always Sunny was great again…god i wonder if it ever gets sick of itself being so awesome.

  14. I absolutely LOVE The League and this episode managed to somehow top last weeks. Though I’m getting a little tired of the Taco musical numbers as the episode caps.

    • THOSE ARE fuckin annoying, but at LEAST THEY keep them in THE EPISODE caps whereas if THEY WERE in the main plot they would JUST FUCKIN hault everything up.

      • THOSE ARE LEAST. THEY, THE EPISODE, THEY WERE JUST FUCKIN.

I feel like Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind right now. Have I cracked the code, or am I just insane? I really don’t know anymore

    • i was too and then their was the “oh no, that’s a real stroke” line and i laughed and ultimately forgave.

better to have them at the end than shoe-horned awkwardly somewhere in the middle.

  15. Thank you, The League, for guaranteeing that the words “Vinegar Stroke” will pop into my head at the absolute worst possible moment.

  16. Did you guys know that yesterday was the 25th anniversary of Calvin and Hobbes? I love C&H. I miss them! So I’m going to post some great C&H strips in this thread. Thread Derail II!

  17. “30 Rock OR Community”? No, fuck YOU, Bing. (I haven’t done a bing joke in a while. Feels good.)

Also, I’m think I’m just going to come back to the thread tomorrow and start talking. Make my own Friday Morning Thursday Night TV Open Thread. Damn you no cable. Who’s with me?!

  18. Seriously, Community might be too funny. It’s disturbing, and it makes other shows seem sad and desperate. Community is the boy in school who you wish had a little acne or wasn’t so bright or something because you know you’ll never get to hit that. Not that I know what it means that I want to have sex with a sitcom, but.

  19. I think Modern Family was seen as an underdog not so much because of the cast, but because nobody expected it to be as good as it is. Sticoms about families are typically so cliche and uninspired that they don’t stand out in any way, and the mockumentary format is quickly becoming overdone. But Modern Family ended up being actually pretty good, with a surprising amount of genuine emotion.

Plus it has Al Bundy NOT putting his hand down his pants and hating his wife, so I’m sure that had something to do with it.

    • It flew a little under the radar, too, I think? I feel like it was badly promoted by ABC. Of course, I never watched anything on ABC until a friend recommended “Modern Family,” so there’s that.

      • True, I don’t think I could name even one other show that comes on ABC, except for Cougar Town, and even then just because my DVR picks up the first 5 minutes of that after Modern Family.

    • Yes, I think it was more that it was seen as a critical underdog because every critic worth his salt had written off ABC entirely. I’m not sure it was ever really a commercial underdog.

  20. I’m there. Whose bright idea was it to move D&D nights to Thursdays, anyway?

    +1 to sadness

  21. Hey, Downvote Troll? Just wanted to say, thanks for the commitment you put into downvoting everything in this post. I know time is money, and that you probably have better things you could be doing, so I just wanted to take the time to say: Hey, thanks for being a troll!

  22. Ty Burrell gives the best performance of the week on “Modern Family” every week

  23. I would just like to thank Community’s wardrobe department for throwing Annie in such saturated crayola colors every week. They really symbolically shout out the innocence she pretends to have and probably really wishes she did, but then you remember the drugs.

  24. Let’s not forget that the one and only Joe Mande was the warmup act for Nick Kroll. Also killed it. It took everything I had not to yell some sort of a double dog during his set. I now have nothing.

  25. “I’m writing this on Sunday, so no one will see it, but it’s super obvious that Community is revving up the love triangle engine. That remark by Brita would have been no big deal if it weren’t explicitly commented on by Abed. They’re doing it.

And that look between Annie and Jeff? Feelings there too.”

~Me, last Sunday. On a thread where people were denying that Brita and Jeff were fuck buddies. I win!

  26. I love how Community is way weirder than any other comedy on television. It’s approaching classic Simpsons levels, which is NOT A BAD THING.

    30 Rock was great! BORKULATOR

The Office was great, if only for the Hay Place plotline. Pam and Jim were tolerable?

Sunny was a Charlie-centric episode, so of course it was good. “You wanna take me on a spaghetti day?” Vermhot’s Wormhat!

    • It’s definitely on the Arrested Development level with the throwback jokes and easter eggs throughout the episodes

    • It really is approaching classic Simpsons. It’s the only analogy I can find for such dense brilliance that is Community. I get the hope that season 4 will be set in Greendale Community College on the set of a TV show live IN MY BRAIN. THAT GOOD.

  27. Also I want Alison Brie to be my common law wife.

  28. I know we all love to rip on the awards going to Modern Family over 30 Rock, but at this point, let’s all get over it. It’s like the Grammy’s. Nobody gives a shit about any of those anymore because they mean nothing.

That being said, Modern Family is a funny show and it’s gotten better this season. Then again, like Gabe, I’m 63 years old and what do I know. I do know families though. Families the darndest things.

Vinegar strokes/The League may be the winner last night, though. Sorry 30 Rock. You were a 9, but League was a 10.

  29. While The Office always has unlikely office activities, WHY WOULD WE JUST WATCH A REGULAR OFFICE ONCE A WEEK FOR 7 YEARS?

That being said, The Office is the reason I’m in business school working on an accounting degree.

  30. I kind of thought 30 Rock was not doubly good but quarterly as good this week. Too broad, too wacky, jokes not that clever. That scene in the microwave lab was pure Outsourced. Liz’s whole “i’ll make them love me” storyline was just ridiculous and out of character.

    • It’s my OPINION, downvote jerk.

      • I know we have a downvote troll, but I have to defend legitimately downvoting comments for a second since that seems derailed here.
I’m not sure where people got the idea that when they express their opinion about something, no one is allowed to disagree with it. The sharing of opinions is a two-way street. I don’t mean to attack you specifically, s0yb0n0, but this is the second time I have seen such a comment in this thread and it is a personal pet peeve of mine. I think you are probably a nice person and definitely allowed to think whatever you want and then post about it here with everything else (heck, I gave you an upvote on your first comment) but if people disagree, they’re allowed!

  31. “You know I’m not a delivery boy. I’m wearing a suit and carrying a microwave!”

  32. I love the Office, and ours is a forever love.

  33. I called Stanley to sell my decommissioned light house with spaceship button.

  34. honestly some of the best tv i’ve seen in a while. community was amazing, 30 rock was awesome as always and the office was very good as well (some really great dwight moments). skipped outsourced (i just dont want to watch it, it’ll never be parks and rec), then always sunny and the league were very very good. when parks and recreation finally comes back I really don’t think i’ll move from 8-11 every thursday.

  35. All my passwords are Big Boobz, from now on.

  36. Did anyone else die laughing during Britta’s blanket fort gay harem?

In lieu of flowers please send shirtless dudes.

  37. You guys, Community is doing some stop-motion animation for an Xmas episode.

  38. Joke of the night for me was Tracy’s “Your booing doesn’t scare me; I know most of you aren’t ghosts.” Best heckle-related line since “Boo-urns”.

  39. best hay crown of all time, he looked like the beet farm jabberwock

  40. I know I’m tardy to the party ’cause we’re a little behind on Community in Australia, (If you didn’t catch that because of my accent, that was: “I know I’m lorry to the lorry ’cause we’re a little shrimp on the barbie in Austrlorry’) but was that a cameo from the Humanimals in Britta’s harem???

I nearly did a spittake on that one.

  41. I know *I* am late to the party, but I don’t understand why everyone is so agitated about downvotes. They are an option – people can use them. If a comment is all that fabulous it will work out in the end. People be expressin’ their opinions.
