Sesame Street’s Bert may or may not have come out of the closet on Twitter, which does not change the fact that he is definitely gay. No puppeto.

  1. Well, anyone who has ever seen the original Muppet Family Christmas TV special, and NOT the edited version that was released on VHS/DVD, will remember the Sesame Street gang putting on a performance of Twas The Night Before Christmas, with Bert and Ernie playing Ma and Pa, respectively. I’m not saying it means anything, just saying…it happened. And Ernie got a kick out of Bert playing his wife.

  3. This is one thing that makes me feel poitive for the future of our country. Not the fact that Bert may or may not have come out on Twitter, but for all of the reasons mentioned in this article.

  4. It aint easy bein’ whiiiiite
    It aint easy bein’ brown
    The muppets are gay
    Franklin’s goin down

  5. But is he fake?

  6. Honestly, I am waiting for Bert to comment on some of his more nefarious activities.

He is a puppet with a lot to answer for, if you ask me.

    • Woah I was just thinking the word “nefarious” but in regards to something else, something personal and unrelated to this shit. Man, you better get out of my head, bird! Quit buying things on my credit card!

  7. Something tells me that Ernie isn’t surprised…

  8. A twitter account for a puppet? What’s next, a twitter account for a dog?

  9. This article was genuinely very nice to read. I feel a little warmer and fuzzier than I did moments prior.

  10. I thought gay people weren’t allowed to have twitter accounts…only twitter unions.

  11. My memories of Sesame Street are fixed from a six-year-old’s point of view, so this kind of makes me uncomfortable. I mean, assigning any sexuality to any Sesame Street muppet. If it makes people feel better, then that’s fine and good, and of course children should learn to respect everyone’s sexual and gender identity, we’re all human beings, etc. I have just always thought of Sesame Street as sexless, and it’s odd to be sort of presented with it now.

Oh well, change or get left behind, grandma.

    • As a young boy, I didn’t need the muppets on Sesame Street to bring the special tingles- Luis and Gordon, yes!!!!

    • In a way, I agree. But I think that increasing the visibility of positive representations of queer individuals and lifestyles is an important way to teach children that bigotry isn’t cool and that we’re all just people. The default assumption is just that every children’s character is heterosexual (for a number of cultural and statistical reasons). The only way for a puppet to be identified as queer is to reference (even completely indirectly) sex in some way.

I think it’s an important distinction between sexualizing a character directed towards children (bad) and giving that character an identity that relates to sex, yes, but also just to the kinds of loving relationships that that character pursues (good).

  12. Double post, sorry!

  13. What a load of bullshit. Bert is not gay, and neither is he straight. They’re puppets on a children’s show, they don’t have sex. All they’ve done is not go out of their way to avoid gay references and guest stars, and that’s a good thing, but it shouldn’t be big news. Not being anti-gay doesn’t make you gay.

  14. And all this time, I just thought he was anal.

  15. If you were gay
    that’s be okay
    I mean, ‘cuz, hey
    I like you anyway
    If it were me
I would feel free to say
    that I was gay
    (but I’m not gay)
