Watching this barely makes up for reading that. But I do like how quiet it is. Things should be more quiet. (Thanks for the tip, Bailey.)

  1. It is nice to feel unfettered happiness.

  2. I’m so happy! I turned on the news yesterday and thought they’d found all the minors I put in the hole in my backyard. Imagine my relief!

  3. Miner hole? I hardly know her!

  4. To paraphrase lawblog, this is my oasis of hope in the barf desert that is the world (sometimes). Just when I think people are the worst, they do something like this…and totally redeem themselves!

  5. Oh, I thought they were stuck in a CHILLE’S. This way makes more sense.

  6. this is nice. no joke-o.

  7. Finally, amidst all the homphobes, reality tv, heartless neighbors, horrible bands stopping traffic, and racist old people, something purely wonderful happens. Thank you Gabe and thank you world.

  8. I know I will probably have rotten vegetables thrown at me for putting this out there, but I don’t really see this being that big of a deal (duck). I mean its not like we were going to leave them down there (duck). Its 2010 we should be able to get people trapped in a mine out. Mine accidents happen, some people get rescued and some die of carbon monoxide poisoning (who is throwing Heirloom tomatoes… they are hard to get!). No one congratulated and cheered BP when they put a plug in the hole in the ocean. (Can we not aim at my face). If anything, the refusal to give up by the trapped miners is the human interest story, but it seems that they got lucky the way they were trapped in that they were able to get things sent down to them, including razors to shave apparently (are you guys throwing garbage now?). I don’t know, I am just not that riveted. I guess all the mistresses that showed up is kind awesome. (……… [knocked out by a particularly large head of cabbage])

    • I want to downvote you for the sentiment, because I got teary-eyed every time someone else was rescued, and it’s certainly a big deal to their families, etc etc, but I want to upvote you for the throwing vegetables commentary. Switzerland over here can’t make up her mind, so I will just not vote at all.

    • Oh, it’s definitely the human interest part that makes this a big deal. It’s a tremendous triumph of the human spirit and will to survive against tremendous odds on a scope that has never before been witnessed IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY of the Earth (in terms of mining, at least!)! It’s quite incredible, and an epic story. Light beats darkness! Good (no one dies and happy reunions all around!) triumphs over evil (everyone could have died while being trapped in the CENTER OF THE EARTH!)! Plus, how often is it that basically the entire planet is riveted and united by a GOOD news story about HAPPY things? Never! Also, nothing this awesome ever happens here in Chile (“I live in Chile!” – me) so I just love this.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, CH-CHI-CHI! LE-LE-LE! LOS MINEROS DE CHILE!!!

      • Why do we always say “triumph of the human spirit”? I don’t mind it – just wondering.

        Victory of the human soul.
        Win for the human essence.
Accomplishment of the homo sapien chutzpah.

        Redo:
“It’s a tremendous accomplishment of the homo sapien chutzpah and will to survive against tremendous odds on a scope that has never before been witnessed IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY of the Earth (in terms of mining, at least!)!”

        Meh. Let’s keep the original.

    • This

      makes it worth it…………….dick*

      *I don’t think you are a dick

    • You da you da best, jwormyk, but this is a great and insteresting story. Think about being trapped in a hole miles beneath the earth in incredible heat with your co-workers (co-workers! they are always the worst) for 2 months (being unable to even SEE for the first 5 days) waiting for clothes, food, projection tvs (they had a projection tv!!) to come through a little whole in the earth while the world’s greatest engineers, scientists, nutritionists, and other professionals work to keep you safe, as happy as can be expected, alive, and prevent you from being crushed by hundreds of tons of rock as they drill you to safety. It’s pretty incredible. And unprecidented. And it had to be mental tourture on these guys and their families every day then went on not knowing if they would make it out alive. So yeah. It’s pretty much a human interest story, but a very interesting human interest story.

    • I think that what everyone else is feeling is appropriate, I have just been relatively heartless recently. I guess what I am trying to say is that this doesn’t stand up to say Captain Sully, or Todd Beamer and the people of United Flight 93, or the Climbers on Mt. Everest in 1996, or the firefighters on 911, or any other act of heroics where one human risks his or her life to save another. Not that it has to be this to warrant the emotional response people are having. It just has to be the previously mentioned heroics to warrant that sort of emotional response in me. Really, all I was trying to do was craft a comment that caused a reaction, but maintained a 0 votes.

  9. I think I speak for practically every person on the planet when I say “Phew”

  10. Ahhhh! My tip got used and I didn’t even attach my name to it! Curses! Anyway, glad you guys enjoyed the video! Happy Thursday! So many exclamation points!!!

  11. I’ve got a sudden urge to go call my dad and tell him I love him.

  12. I feel like Earth needed a win. Let’s put this in the one tattered scrapbook that survives after 2012.

  13. This video really brought a lump to my throat. I got so emotional watching this video that it brought tears in my eyes.Stimelex
