On last night’s episode of The Simpsons, street artist Neckface Banksy animated the “couch gag” at the end of the opening credits, and, uh, it’s kind of amazing?
BOOM. Open your eyes, sheeple, etc. Seriously, though, despite the fact that the only effect of having Banksy animate an anti-capitalist couch gag on The Simpsons is to make blogs lose their blogminds while the rest of the world inevitably shrugged it off with a “that’s weird” and an “I don’t get it” and an “I’m going to go get some more cheese sauce for these chocolate covered pretzels,” it’s still pretty incredible that it happened at all. If you can’t KILL YOUR TELEVISION, this is a decent alternative. (Via TheDailyWhat and just the Internet in general last night.)

Banksy is no El Barto that’s for sure.
I’ll have something pithy and funny to say about this as soon as I can figure out what it means.

…douche chill!
Doesn’t this seem a little hollow? It’s probably true that near-slave labor makes all the cheap merchandise with the Simpsons name on it, but that’s also netting Matt Groening tons of money.
So shouldn’t he either A) not point it out and keep cashing those checks, or B) not point it out, but also quit allowing for that to happen?
Yeeaaahh. If you think about it, it’s kind of assy to have someone point it out on your show only to do nothing about it. Or maybe the whole thing was just a joke to make us think he cared and the return of the catchy music was kinda like “PYSCHE! DON’T CARE!”?
Being white is hard.
It’s like a metaphor for Columbus Day
Thats what I thought!!!!! (Your talking about not getting mail or something right?)
KILL YOUR TV (but first watch some cartoons!)
It’s way better when they put the writer’s sketch at the start of the show ,like this.
Banksy is supposedly an anti-capitalist, “underground” graffiti artist who likes to make political points and shuns normal artistic routes.
In my local super-store, T-Shirts with Banksy drawings on them are selling for £20 (like, a bajillion dollars).
FUCK BANKSY.
we know he’s a gigantic capitalist. Doesn’t mean he can’t say some interesting/provocative/powerful shit.
All of this is subjective, obvs
But it does kind of make him a hypocrite, don’t you think?
Whatever…Johny Rotten was on Judge Judy and they sell Obey Norstroms. So is life.

are the shirts branded as being from banksy? or they just have his art on them?

That was amazing.
I’m pretty aware of Bansky. While hippiecritical and sometimes senseless, I think his stuff is funny. I watched the opening last night and I missed the part where his name shows up.
Besides outsider art I’m not much of an art appreciator, and I have no idea this fits into whatever arbitrary rules art is supposed to follow, but I thought it was funny. I laffed. #laffed.
Literally me right now
No creepo, but you are adorable and I want to give you puppy treats.
So wait… Are we in on the joke, or is the joke on us?
ah bro you’re blowin my minddddddddddd
If you don’t know, man, then you are the joke. Wait, what?
Jokeception
Whatever the answer….I knew it before everyone else…or something.
I was watching this with my kids and they were both mesmerized, then sad, then full of heartbreaking questions.
Personally, I was hoping for a narwhal instead of a unicorn. This little bit made on the Simpsons was pretty funny, and I haven’t seen that in a LOOOOONG time.
YES when I saw the horn I was totally thinking “COME ON Narwhal! Come on Narwhal!” We need more Narwhals in our television shows because it seems to me like they are vastly under appreciated.
I too instantly thought narwhal. This is probably because I volunteer at a shelter for under-privileged narwhals.
“I am sad because this show hasn’t been good since season 7″ – Sad Unicorn
For serious! This is the first time I’ve seen anything Simpsons in over ten years.
Also, shouldn’t they have been using that unicorn horn for glue, since I’m pretty sure unicorns are related to horses?
Not to go all off-topic here, but I just discovered that Target has both Booberry and Frankenberry available. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT NEWS. I understand that Banksy is all anti-capitalism and whatnot, but I’m pretty sure even he is going to make a point to pick up the greatest cereal known to man at his local supermarket.
Meh.
I guess this was supposed to make me think, but the only big question I came away from this was, “Was the tape coming out of the dolphin’s mouth or does its tongue have some sort of adhesive on it?”
Cheese sauce on chocolate covered pretzels…genius! What was that first thing you were talking about?
Socialist couch gag ever?
I beg to differ The worst Socialist couch gag was in the late ’60′s, when Brezhnev tried to lighten the mood during a particularly terse state trip to China and put fake dog poop on Chairman Mao’s favorite divan, pretending to blame it on his famously ill-behaved Samoyed, Kudryavka. Mao didn’t take the joke well at all and relations between the U.S.S.R. and China worsened, resulting in the 1969 Sino-Soviet border conflict.
And now you know the rest of the story.

Whoa. I had no idea the job market for American 5-11 year olds was so terrible, until I saw what booming industry they have in China (?)! We need to extend our stimulus program to help the children! Do you hear me Republicans? WE NEED TO STIMULATE THE CHILDREN!!!
Banksy was pretty cool, but Bill James! Sabermetrics! Bueller?
I’d say getting anything even remotely subversive on primetime television counts as a victory no matter which way you slice it. But I am confused as to the perspective of the Simpsons braintrust on this.
Banksy needs to get back to his Art Department job at “Duh Aficionado”.
my first memories of simpsons marketing were of bart shilling for church’s chicken. then and there i decided to never buy any licensed simpsons stuff, and receive as little as possible (family knows i watch the show)– but then i relented a bit once i discovered ebay. so, impure as i am, i still would like to see more responsible marketing/tie-ins.
really, the things about the banksy bit were:
1. it was only a more extreme version of the korean-care-worn-animator bits they–and others– have done in the past, and…
2. his name appeared not once, but twice, as graffiti in the beginning of the sequence– i know 2 seems like a small number, but in a highly concentrated format like a title sequence, that’s pretty much a hammer to the forehead– the second ‘banksy’ made me roll my eyes, “ugh, i get it!”
