Most things in this world go unexplained. It is 2010, and we still don’t know how to cure the common cold, or where to locate France on a map. And some people dedicate their entire lives to finding answers to these elusive questions. There are philosophers and anthropologists and space scientists and junior high math teachers, all trying to get to the secret heart of the universe. But sometimes we come up against questions for which there is no answer, the very idea of an answer is an impossibility, and this glaring existential fact throws our ineffable and inexplicable blip in the ever-expanding, infinite multi-verse right back in our faces. Who knows why we are here, or whether there is a God, or why Aretha Franklin sang “I Say A Little Prayer” with musical accompaniment by former Secretary of State and war-monger, Condoleezza Rice? You cannot know. But that will not stop people from continuing to try. They will watch the clip after the jump and then they will have a double espresso and sit under a tree and in the end, they’ll die alone like the rest of us.

So intense. What does it mean?! (Via TheAwl.)

    • I think the lack of a ridiculous hat lets you know where Franklin’s loyalties are.

    • I think it’s more like:

“Worlds been had colliding.” — Gabe

      • You may be right. My reading was colored by the gratuitous use of the term “warmonger,” which could well be incidental to the point of the post. It is the kind of jab that our beloved blogger is prone to casually tossing into a post about someone with whom he is ideologically unsympathetic.

        • I think you are really funny, specially in the captions and BNPGs, also I’m new here, so take what I say with a grain of salt but….. It seems you, much like Steve Winwood, get into prissy streaks of pointless complaining. If you don’t like a certain post, why comment?

          • Welcome danby! I hope you find yourself comfortable and happy here.

Just to clarify, I never complain without a point. Many here might not understand my point and many others may disagree with it, but there is always a point. If the point needs clarification, I would be happy to offer it. I’m not really certain what is unclear in this case, but I’d be happy to try to explain if you tell me what is confusing you.

To answer your question, I comment if I feel something needs to be said. I have been here long enough that I am a part of this community, and, as a part of this community, I believe that, to an extent, what is posted here reflects on me as a citizen of videogum. If I read something here that I feel demands a response, I feel that is my duty to respond.

Frankly, I have a different political viewpoint from many who frequent this site, and while I often bite my tongue, so to speak, in many cases doing so would make me a hypocrite. At a certain point, I would either have to abandon this community or speak my mind, and I choose to speak. I understand that my positions are not always popular, but that just makes me more appreciative that they are treated respectfully.

I can certainly understand your curiosity as to why I bother making seemingly antagonistic comments. I can’t speak for anyone else here, but I say what I say because I care about what is being said. If I didn’t care, I would spend my time elsewhere. I don’t make it a point to criticize what kinds of topics are points of focus or what features are recurring, but if I feel that a legitimate point of view is being treated with a lack of proper respect, I will try to say something on its behalf. I might try to frame it in an amusing way, but I will do my best to defend that point of view, even if I do not hold that viewpoint myself.

Gabe can accuse me of being shallow or superficial, but I think he knows that I have a valid point. I believe that most of the people who have made this place a community also appreciate why I do what I do.

I hope that you understand, and I hope that you feel welcome here.
