On the plus side I just found out it’s possible for James Franco to not look hot.
The same does not apply to John Hamm
Truism.
I’m so glad he doesn’t look hot in this. When I first found out he was planning to play Ginsberg, Franco’s looks worried me. Ginsberg himself was not the most attractive man so it’s nice that it looks like they put some though in to that instead of just having Franco be himself.
When do we get the James Franco auto-biopic about his career as a professional amazing writer?
I think it will be a double feature with I’m Still Here- The Lost Years of Zach Galifianakis I mean Joaquin Phoenix
Biopics are how one panders for an oscar.
This film = Not a biopic. Not even really about Ginsberg himself…more of commentary on interpretation of art set against that obscenity trial.
Real holy laughter in the ‘Gum! They saw it all! The Tophers Grace! The Gibson yells!
Ovictoryforgetyourunderwearwe’refreeGum!
Just having Jon Hamm, James Franco, and the words “hysterical naked” in the same trailer will probably guarantee box office success.
John Hamm would make a rad Phillip Marlowe in a Big Sleep reboot
Dude. Most brilliant.
And if David Lynch could do something along the lines of Mulholland Drive again then he would be a great director for a Big Sleep reboot as well. Not however if he’s going to go crazy like with Inland Empire. Fuck that noise, guy
I love that everyone’s main complaint with Inland Empire is that it’s too out there. In related news, I wasn’t a fan of Infinite Jest because there were too many footnotes.
Actually my main complaint with Inland Empire was “It’s boring.” Sorry, bro. I love a lot of that dude’s films but you got to try a little harder and make it interesting, not just random boring stuff. Or else there’s no zazz.
Not enough people-sized rabbits.
My main complaint with Inland Empire was “Do The Locomotion.”
They’re pretty.
Uh, the Locomotion girls. Not the rabbits.
I got ya.
Jon Hamm is definitely great at everything, but if anyone’s going to play Philip Marlowe, my vote’s for Don Cheadle.
Why reboot Big Sleep when their’s dozens of other Chandler Phillip Marlowe novels?
Because Hollywood is a slow reader?
Doesn’t look anything like Ruth.
They’ve got the powerful General Hospital/Mad Men demographic wrapped up.
I hope Mickey Rourke makes a cameo as a roided-out Bukowski.
Topher Grace IS Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
Ke$ha IS Moloch
Really wish they had cast David Cross, ala his Ginsberg cameo in I’m Not There. Beardy poetic Cross on a scooter for 90 minutes, plleeeeaasssseee.
It would have been great but Cross played an older Ginsberg which wouldn’t have worked for Howl.
If you’re interested in a real movie about Allen Ginsberg, may I recommend “The Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg,” a documentary by Jerry Aronson. My personal bias in favor of the film is because I had the pleasure of studying film with Jerry Aronson at the University of Colorado. However, other, more respected, film critics like the movie, too.

“I went to film school.” – Ginger Ball Z
So did I. $100 says you went to grad school.
You would lose that bet. But I did spend 6 years in undergrad, so I got lots and lots of edumacation.
Please make that check out to Ginger Ball Z, Esq., and deposit directly into my TomatoBank.
JACKPOT!
…grad students are the worst
Possibly the first and last time I can look at Videogum at work and have it directly pertain to my job! Thanks Gabe!
“I am going to film school, and get people coffee at a film company.”

Man if I was a college sophomore I’d be all about telling people how all about this movie I was.
Make it high school junior. I was an early blooming jerk
“I hate poetry”? Now really. That reminds me of the time my Dad said “I don’t like fiction.”
And I had hoped Jon Hamm was cast as Kerouac.
Amirite?
You are so right.
On the subject/off the subject, I had to share this link. It’s a poem on McSweeney’s based on Howl, but called “Tweet”. It’s pretty great: http://mcsweeneys.net/2010/7/13miller.html
It’s okay, Gabe. Poetry still loves you.
“I am not afraid of launching my movie career by starring in a period drama set in essentially the same era as the television show that I am known for.” – Jon Hamm
I will be seeing this. Because dreamy.
Jon Hamm + James Franco = me seeing this movie
