Yup! Last night was a good one! For as much as I complain about The Office‘s lukewarm, heavily-tread water, mega-desk was hilarious. And so was Dwight singing “Cat’s in the Cradle.” And the truth is, as Erin and Andy’s date reminded us (as if we needed reminding after last week), no comedy show does genuine sweetness better. Parks and Recreation was also very solid, and it definitely seemed last night like the show took a solid step towards making Chris Pratt the main star of the show (yes please!). Also was that really Nick Offerman’s wood working studio? You crazy for this canoe, Ron Swanson.
But the gem at the heart of last night’s serpent statue (what on Earth am I talking about) was 30 Rock. Last night’s episode was probably the best of the season, and just one of the better episodes of the show period. Elizabeth Banks! Brian Williams! Jack Welch! EGOT call-back! Geiss Cubes! Back bread! Liz’s “Fuck the Pain Away” ringtone! Jeffrey, we lost the tournament! Good job, 30 Rock. You are so good at being a super funny TV show, it’s ridiculous.
Right, guys? Guys?

Guys, I think I got a case of shoe shine head today. It feels like there’s a thunderstorm in my brain.
AHHHH!!! I about died when I heard Peaches coming from Liz’s phone! It took my love for her to a level I didn’t think possible.
I lost my shit when that happened. SO good. Bobsled.
I missed everything last night, I had a bad case of shoe-shine head.
Known cure: cheeseburgers
Also, napping in the floor.
I dunno, these thunderstorms in my head are pretty bad…
Sorry, West… I didn’t realize I drank your milkshake there. I’m like a commenting vigilante: comment first, read comments later.
It’s okay, there are more important things to think about. Like how good I look in this golf outfit, it just makes me feel better than everyone else.
I see you lost a pom-pom there, it must have fallen off while you were puttin’ it up.
Kenneth is really start to bug me as a character, to much wacky in these new seasons, he should be used less often, I think 30 Rock could benefit more.
Otherwise, solid eps all around – Community gets the win for me and I find myself looking forward to it the most, as well as Archer over on FX
Kenneth bugs me sometimes too. Although I did love the really subtle Immortal Kenneth throwback – “I remember that commercial, you were a fat baby.”
It really bugs me too. I do not LOL at any other show on TV. I love 30 Rock so much.
But Kenneth The Page is the weakest link. Always. The Kenneth jokes don’t match the tone of the rest of the show.
One of the loudest LOLs I had with the ep was Kenneth-as-donkey. I humbly disagree. (I also not-so-humbly downvote.)
One of my biggest LOL’s last night was Kenneth’s perfect recollection of Jenna’s baby commercial. Anytime there’s a joke about him being like ninety-five or immortal, I just lose it.
Whoops. Sorry, Scrablo.
The donkey joke fell completely flat with me.
Last night was great! Community fell a little flat for me, but, “I don’t understand the appeal of Glee!” made me laugh a lot. And that comes from someone who absolutely understands the appeal of Glee.
Agreed, last week was so epic that I don’t think it can be topped. I thought the Abed/Shirley moments were cute, the Nazi Swastika was hilarious, but the Troy/Britta subplot was awful.
I had to miss everything else, though. There was a Project Runway party at my house, so instead I watched that (both the old and new episode). Does anyone still follow it? The designers are more or less fabulous this year, even though for the earth/air/water/fire challenge there was no freaking color.
I really like Community, but I’m worried that it’s headed for that “trying too hard” realm. Hold strong, Community!
as they set things up at the beginning of the episode, I’m always worried that they are about to hit the “trying too hard” realm, as well! …but man, when Britta was actually getting the switch I was surprised to find myself laughing. “She’s had enough… she’s had enough!” truth in comedy…
I’m still watching PR. This season is waaaaaaaaaaay better than last season. I haven’t watched last night’s epi yet. I don’t have cable and they don’t post new epis online until Saturday.
“Disappointing you is like choking the little mermaid with a bike chain.”
One of the best lines of the entire night, imo.
Yeah my mom told me there’d be white people that did this: Pocket watches, coffee grinders, and pretending to be into steamboats. But let’s get this straight, this is real life, my nana is gonna whip you… Not unless I find her a switch!
I love all of those things. I guess I’m whiter than I thought. (To be fair: I live in New Orleans, where pocket watches, coffee, and steamboats factor in prominently to one’s everyday life.)
The Glee line was made all the more funny by the Principle Figgins crossover.
That’s like telling me I can’t fart in my own car.
I about died when the receptionist said “Bobsled” As she hung up the phone. Ethnic humor was a win last nite for 30 rock.
what if it laid eggs in the bed?
Did anyone else notice that the director’s slate during Tracy’s “can’t do anything twice” takes was from A BLAFFAIR TO REMEMBLACK? Is that the original JUST WRIGHT?
“Pac-Man, I’m Jewish!”
Too lazy to find a screencap, but “Hard Cheeses and your Root Canal, Liz” had me lizzing.
Did anyone watch the marriage ref? I have to admit I was half tempted b/c of LD and Ricky Gervais but I watched the “Telephone” video from 10-11pm instead.
I watched the first 5ish minutes of it. Then I had to turn it off. It was awful. Ricky Gervais was funnier than I would have expecting given the show he was on, Madonna was boring, and Larry David was just mean. And not funny mean.
My DVR was actually recording it, which turned into an interesting “Who secretly wanted to watch The Marriage Ref” argument that went on probably longer than neccessary. No one owned up.
I thought Larry was the best part! The whole thing was surreal and fascinating. Larry David screaming at Madonna with Ricky cackling away beside them…MUST SEE TV.
I watched it! (Resident Marriage Ref-head here) It was excruciatingly uncomfortable. I was waiting for this episode, to see what the dynamic between Larry, Ricky and Madonna would be like and HOO BOY was it awkward. It was kind of sublime in a way. Because none of them really wanted to be there, none of them cared about the couples, nor did they even get along with each other. Larry David’s vitriol was on the next level. I almost feel like that episode of The Marriage Ref could very easily turn into a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode next season.
Did Ricky and Larry not get along? Because they got along swimmingly on that “Ricky Gervais meets Larry David” special. I know this question could be easily answered by watching the show, but I won’t put myself through that.
Larry and Ricky were fine with each other (at one point they joked about starting a show about the two of them being hetero roommates), but the main issue is that Madonna was sitting between them, and she was visibly beginning to hate LD by about halfway through (LD hated her right off the bat). Near the end it was just seething anger. It was kind of hilarious if you’re into discomfort humor. Ricky kept being like, “This is the single weirdest show I’ve ever been on.”
Ricky made a horrible show great. Like when he pointed out the people sitting above them and wanted to know why they were there. It was the same question that was in my head
Love Parks & Rec (Swanson Code!), Office was solid, but I’m getting a wee bit tired of Liz always being the main story arc of 30 Rock. I enjoy watching her sad and lonely life, but one or two eps without her would be a nice change. Same goes for Jack’s dating. I think Lindsay from Wet Hot American Summer cannot pull off her character either, she’s a bit bland and expected.
Saw a couple tweets from people saying they enjoyed Marriage Ref. I then enjoyed unfollowing them.
oh wow. you still think of Elizabeth Banks as “Lindsay from Wet Hot American Summer”? she was great in that, but she’s done a lot of great stuff since then too!
Rabbi Chang.
I was wondering how 30 Rock was going to handle the Rip Torn thing.
If you’re going to pass some eye water, I’ll go get you a weakness tissue. =)
and GE selling NBC!!
My favorite parts of 30 Rock were the voiceover “Lindsey Vonn” “Gold Medal”, and the awesome Dr. Spaceman Dr. Pepper commercial (I realize that it wasn’t part of the show, but what a treat!).
I loved it when Dr. Spaceman became troubled because he could only taste 22 flavors.
“Wait- Ah, there it is! 23!”
Damn. how did I miss these comments? YES THIS WAS AWESOME!
I wanted to braid that episode’s hair (and then take it out back and get it pregnant).
I think we need to start talking about Archer. I’m not sure if it fits in with the dynamic of these other shows but it is fucking hilarious.
Archer is great! And Dr. Spaceman is on it too!
Did you see Dr. Spaceman’s Dr. Pepper Commercail? What the Awesome!?
Parks & Rec is my favorite Thursday night show. It has been on fire all season. Leslie listing the things she can’t do (like spell “lieutenant”) was hilarious!
What about what she will do?

If this comment were any more sexist, it’d be a fuck shit stack.
excuse me, i do not cry about my mother. i hang up on her, and then cry about my ex boyfriend.
My nether regions are still a little Gwyneth Paltrow’s blog-y down there thanks to the Michael Sheen cameo. If this had aired back to back with the Jon Hamm episode, Tina Fey would owe me money for how dead I would be of awesome.
I loved Jeff’s confession that he doesn’t get the appeal of Glee. It made me laugh so hard that I passed some eye water. I either need some weakness tissues or a seat on the hug plane.
Did anyone else notice the really subtle callback on 30 Rock about Jack making western omelets for his girlfriends after they have sex?
